Tranny, or not ?!?

OK this is kinda hard to explain, but here it goes.

Sometimes, not always, when i am just driving around and I let off the gas I can hear a "clunk". It's a metal noise no doubt. It normally happens when I start to drive from a stop, and after the car shifts out of first, and then i let off the gas.

Possibly your carrier bearing or drive shaft. I made a VFAQ on the carrier bearing fix. http://www.plymouthlaser.com/shaft.htm

You can crawl under and grab the drive shaft. Move it around and see if the sound is familiar. I one time had half the bearing fall and when I hit the gas, it would smack the exhaust. Pics of that prob here : http://www.plymouthlaser.com/awd2.htm

How hard is it to just replace the carrier bearings?

It is hard if you do not have the tools. I have the VFAQ coming, just had to do a rush valve body job today.....

It involves removing the saift from car, U-Joints, taking it apart so on.....

When you do all that, might as well rebuild the whole thing.....
