Okay,

I sent the seals to someone and they said this fixed their NO OD problem...... Nothing guaranteed but I made the FAQ to help. http://www.plymouthlaser.com/ecseals.htm

If anyone here does it and can get a picture of a way to press down the Return Spring effectively, email me and I will add it. There is a special tool for it but have not purchased it............yet

Other pics of rebuild so far: http://www.plymouthlaser.com/tranreb.htm

I'll make this a sticky for the moment given that there seems to be some problems with the End Clutch on AT DSM's...;)

Over the years, I've done so many of these units that I can easily compress the return spring and install the snap ring by hand with no tools other than snap ring pliers, it's just a matter of technique. I'll try to take a picture next time, if that helps.

I did the end clutch install last weekend, and have a couple of suggestions for maybe modifying the VFAQ. Should I post them here, or just contact Charles directly? I'm not sure if he's still updating the site any more....Charles, are you out there? :D

OK, looks like I'll just post my comments here. I should have done this earlier while my memory was still fresh, as things are getting a little fuzzy by now.

Anyway, in the fifth picture down on Charles' site, he shows a photo of the spline with the end clutch pack taken off. You can see three slots around the spline where a 3-pronged ring fits into. It wasn't clear to me at first whether this ring is part of the end clutch or not, and the article says "There is no need to remove this!". I wasn't sure if he was talking about the 3-pronged ring thing or the big gear underneath. But I found out that yes, you should remove the 3-pronged ring (I wish I knew the correct name for it) since it will make reattaching the end clutch pack a lot easier.

I meant the gear and everything else under it. This is to simplify the process and the VFAQ. I have had people email me and did the install wrong. Easier = less mistakes.

Realistically, if you remove the big gear you can place it in the end clutch and it makes it easier to line up all of the teeth on the frictions and steels once installed. See picture here for clarity: http://www.plymouthlaser.com/alto/ecsup.jpg

The 3 pronged ring (which I think you are referring to) is in the End clutch assembly and called the thrust washer. It is referenced on this page: http://www.plymouthlaser.com/ecseals.htm It is the 4th picture on that page.

I hope this helps.

Mitsubishi Part Numbers for seals:

MD754365 piston inner
MD754885 The outer seal D RING!?!
MD722531 seal with brass
MD711875 This is a metal seal for outside the end clutch assembly, the back of it

ALTO has this entire seal for CAD$50

total cost from KW Mitsu 25.60 with tax

you just DON'T get the clutches from the dealer 30 each for plates and like $20 for clutches

I am not 100% sure on which is which because I undid the packes all together. but get them all.

putting the retaining snap ring is total bitch. I think I have found a solution, email me if you need it

The clutches and plates are ALTO. I got them from TCS in Vancouver. costed total of CAD$89 bucks clutches and plates $7 each you need 8 total.

They have a good business practice. The box hat I got was big but they send t faster than promised.

I have a great way to put the C clip back on the pressure plate in the endclutch.
Use 3-4 welders vicegrip style clamps to push the spring down all at once to lay in the washer and then the C-clip. If you make each clamp catch a couple ears, then 4 clamps should do the trick and make installing or disassembly very easy!!!
Mine overdrive still does not enguage though. Not sure why??

There isn't that much to screw up. Reread the VFAQ's and if you have a specific question, start a new thread and ask away.

Follow the vfaq.....

thats it. All there is to it.

I did mine without ever touching a tranny before. It was simple.

You really cant mess it up if you just take your time and follow step by step.

There should be two articles on vfaq. Use em both.

If you got the IPT kit, then you may have some stuff not shown in there.... I didnt even use everything I got. But all the seals and disks were swapped.

The only advice I can give to anyone installing this kit: MAKE SURE YOU LUBRICATE ALL SEALS WITH TRANSMISSION FLUID. I didn't and my seals ripped.

yea but there's just like a couple things that made me iffy...for instace the whole thing about a spring needed to be put back on with a special screw? yea i got my kit from ipt it just came in like 2 hours ago and it came with like rubber band kinda rings.......and in the v-faq theres a whole other section about replacing seals....do I need to buy new seals or did the ipt kit come with it or do I have to do it?.....last question.....the goo they used, should i just use it where the v-faq used it or is it absolutly necessary?

the_skin_eater
06-28-2007, 01:42 PM
Dont know about any goo... I used tranny fluid, thats all...

Dont know about any spring and screw either....
You prolly mean the lock ring thing that you can use a clamp on to get back on.

Honestly...Take the end clutch off, and you will see IMMEDIATLY what most of that is for.
There not rubber band things, they are seals. the big one goes on the case of the end clutch.
Your making this waaay harder than it should be.

The kit comes with the seals too.

if you need help get a hold of me. Ill do what I can.

You don't HAVE to replace the seals. If you just want to replace the disks, you can.

There have been alot of people not having OD even after doing this kit..You MUST replace the seals and the clutches..Why would you want to do it half way ? On my car, the clutches were fine and the seal around the disk was bad...Take your time and do all that is required....
