View Full Version : UR crank pulley: how much power can be gained??

Hey everyone, I just ordered an Unorthodox Racing Underdrive Crank Pulley, and I was wondering if anyone had this mod done to their 1.8, and what the hp/torque gains were approximately. I just don't wanna have my hopes up then all of a sudden get it put on and realize I wasted 50 bucks!

Oh, and by the way, just to let everyone know, my car is being painted Blue Mica Metallic starting Monday. I'll get pics up as soon as she's done:D

Where did you order the pulley from?

I ordered the pulley directly from UR for 65 bucks including s&h.http://www.unorthodoxracing.com/mitsubishi_eclipse.html They're discontinuing them soon, so I'd suggest ordering it as soon as you can if you're going to. Anyone got word on the power gains yet?

Is the pulley dampened like the factory one??:dunno:

Blackboost, I have no clue...dampened? You're confusing me, I just bought the pulley cuz UR claims it "adds horspower throughout the rpm range". I still didn't get it yet, major bummer. I'm gonna have to wait to put it in till after my car gets painted:( Oh well, I hope it's worth it.

The factory pulley is a two piece assembly. Between them there goes a rubber, that rubber is the vibration damper. Most UDP don't come with this as their just a solid one piece design. The things is that these one piece design UDP can cause crankshaft bearing wear...:(

uhhh well there was no rubber piece between the sections of my stock pully when i took mine apart.... ah well, just a random comment. good luck with your stuff guys! I was deffinatly going to buy this part as well but money has been really tight since I have been at college this year so I havent yet. Maybe if it is still available sometime when I have money I will pick it up.

My bad...

The 1.8 crank pulley isn't dampened from the factory like the 2.0 ones is. Sorry guys...

I think (been a long time since I worked on a 1.8) that the 1.8 crank pulley isn't even dampened from the factory...

I don't have mine on yet, I'm waiting for my car to get back. I'll definitely have it on by next Monday, at the latest, so I'll let you know when I drive it.

thanks man tell me when you get it on.

im about to order it and a pully for my alternator too.

My mechanic told me that he's seen gains with lightweight crank pulleys as high as 7 hp. And, he is a mechanic, so I'd guess he'd know just as well as anyone.

did you get it on yet ?

My car's still in the garage getting painted. I should have it back tomorrow, but it might be Thursday before I have it. Then I'll have to wait the weekend, so Monday or Tuesday I'll have it on, definitely. But according to the paper that comes with it from UR, I won't notice max hp gains till 5-7 days after installation cuz the computer has to reset and adjust to it.

Would disconnecting my battery and resetting the ecu make it adjust to the pulley faster? Or do I have to wait the full 5-7 days that it says?

If you reset the ECU the adjustment process wil be longer...

More than likely it will be a gradual power increase over those 5-7 days, so just drive to work everyday thinking your car is getting a bit faster as the days go on :)

I'm gonna order it right now :)

Horrible news for me...I won't have my car back from being painted till the end of next week sometime. Probably Thursday, cuz something came up and the painter couldn't paint...so now someone's gonna have to tell me (probably you talonblingbling) how the power increase is, cuz I won't have mine on till the monday after next:( Oh well, I guess I'll live. Everyone that gets it, just post how well it worked for your car. I'll be taking my car to Keystone raceway a few days after I get it on, so I'll have a 1/4 et to judge by.

Awesome man, lemme know when you start feeling the power gain, or if your engine runs smoother or anything. I just got my car back from being painted today, so sometime this week hopefully I'll be getting mine on...FINALLY!!!:)

Hey guys, I just got my UR crank pulley on today, haven't noticed anything other than the engine's running a bit smoother it seems. Maybe it's just me, but oh well. I'll let you know what my 1/4 time is in that 1/4 et thread after next thursday when I run it. One thing's for sure, if it doesn't make much of a difference, it's a Shiatload lighter than the stock pulley!

How'd the install go? Did you have to re-adjust the timing and whatnot?

eclipse2nr91
10-25-2002, 04:48 PM
I had my regular mechanic do it, so I'm not sure. I don't think he had to do anything other than get a new belt (shorter one since the UR pulley is smaller) and just slap on the pulley with the proper torque specs.

TaLoNBLiNGBLiNG
10-25-2002, 06:08 PM
Do you know the exact belt size that he put on? I am going to be putting it on today, but would rather have the belt already than to try and bum a ride to the parts store and pick one up. Also, how long did it take? I'm guessing like an hour or so since it's just un-bolt, loosen, bolt, tighten.

eclipse2nr91
10-25-2002, 07:58 PM
Sorry man, not 100% on the belt size, it should be on the paper at the bottom the pulley came with...They use Gates belt sizes, and suggest Gates belts be used with their pulleys. I don't know where the paper is though, so I can't help ya with it.:(

ya i really didnt feel any gains from the pully just that my engine does run smoother. now my engine squeak i think maybe my waterpump since i have a new alternator and pully and belt, but i dont know. ill post the belt size later when i get my car back. the install was easy its just 8 bolts to take the old one off and four for the new one. then funny thing is that the pully for our engines has the same bolt pattern of the one of the 2.0l and ours is smaller and a hell of a lot cheaper.

Since I got my pulley on, I've driven a total of about 270 miles (i've been going everywhere lately). And tonight when I was on my way home, I pushed my big bad power button down for the first time in months, and slammed it to the floor....and to my surprise, for the first time ever, my car threw me back in my seat. It wasn't like hardcore torque or anything, but it did push me back. It was real cold out, and I'm sure that had somethin to do with it, but I'm beginning to think that pulley is helping. And it DEFINITELY made my engine run smoother.:D
