my OD is messed up so i was wondering if it was ok to drive on the highway without it. i mean even if you dont go over 55 the car revs pretty high, so i wanna know if that does further damage to the tranny, the third gear. thanx for any advice

You will be heating the fluid more and could mess up the frictions and plates (among other things).

I recommend trying to fix it and take it easy on the highway until doing so.

VFAQS about the OD under AT section on my home web page.

I drove mine for a few months without overdrive. I ended up burnin out the clutches. The tranny oil is so dark it looks like oil.

I would just fix it at your house there is plenty of instructions. Plus most transmission shops will feed you some bullshit about it being extremly labor intensive when it is about a 1 hour job.

I agree with last post.

I think if you can turn a wrench and follow instructions, you can do the end clutch.

The Seals are a little tough but can be done as well and would if you pull the End clutch out. I do have the instructions on the website and maybe someone local can lend you hand.

I wouldn't push because the kits are $75 and a used tranny about 500 bucks and up. Not guaranteed used tranny that is. My Alto rebuild Master kit is 300 bucks alone. We won't mention labor at all :P It can get ugly.

I thought that the third gear locks up ? And therefore would not put that much stress on the tranny?

well, here is the ending to my story. i called up the guy that was going to do the work for me (Mitsu mechanic for 20 yrs) and he said that driving with 3 gears is fine as long as you dont push the car too hard. So i drove out there at around 45-50 (RPM's under 3k) . he did the work in about 20 minutes. Yeh, it did not look too hard but than again, he must have done it thousands of times. also, he mentioned a very interesting thing, he said for city driving, i should keep the OD off to prevent its dragging when it's not being enaged and prolong its life. Sounds like a very wise suggestion. well, just wanted to let you guys know that. Thanx for all your help and suggestions...
