I know this question has been asked 100000times. I will still answer it the same. In my opinion its not worth the time/effort/money to switch from a/t -> m/t. Its far easier and time/money effective to sell your car and buy a 5spd.

Well put James. :)
If you really want the M/T experience, start looking at your local used car dealerships, in the newspapers, etc for a 5-speed car. Also, better put yours up for sale or trade it in. That would be the "better" way of converting to M/T.

What if you've already dropped a ton of cash/time into your auto car... you're not going to get a return on your money spent.
Seems like less than 10 hours of work is worth the trouble and money, especially for those of us who like our car and have modified it.
I found a donor car... the owner is willing to sell me everything to do the swap for $600. $600. and less than 10 hours aint soo bad.... a weekend project. Plus, this is one mod that will actually add value to your car. the resale value of automatics are less than that of 5speed cars (value being what a person is willing to pay, from what I've seen anyways).

Anyone with an auto transmission that wants to turn it into a 5 speed only needs to know one thing. Get the required parts and do the swap. Just do it and don't debate all this "Time" and "Money" BS.
It's funny how people who have worked on DSMs for years will say, "Sell the car and buy a new one, it's not worth it". How much horse shit is that? I mean really... I totally feel how it is, I have an auto ESi, I have the 5 speed transmission and 98% of the parts in my garage awaiting swapping. The auto tranny is already pulled along with my engine. Plus the fact I just spent $2,000 on my suspension... yeah let me sell the car and give up the cash I put into it along with all the hours It took to replace the bushings, install the sway bars and braces and some of the arms with joints and the struts/springs.
People, If you want the feel of a 5 speed, e-mail me and I'll help you out. I found my parts for under $900 online from various people parting out their talon. If somebody says it's going to cost you over $3,000 for parts, punch them in the face and call them a moron for me, please. And "All this time", "All this time to swap", "Too much time"... Why own a car if you're not gonna put a few hours into a HUGE MOD? Come on... It's a transmission swap where everything matches to a certain extent, it's not like you're cutting your roof off to make it a convertible.
I'm not starting anything here, I'm just saying I'm going through the process right now and it's working for me, and it's costing me under $900 to do. About 4 months ago when I'd ask people about this same thing I got such asshole comments back and I got so depressed because NO ONE would help me or answer me seriously. I felt like shooting people for being so mean and ignorant. Some people may not have enough tools, whatever the case may be. If you have a decent amount of tools that can get you by, it'll take a little longer but seriously, I pulled my engine and dropped the tranny within a day, the install shouldnt be more than 2 days of 6 hours of work.

16G TSI What part of Cincy are you from, I'm up in West Chester, you go up to the cruise in forest park on thursdays?
For what it's worth, A/T have a better retail value that M/T. Look at most cars that have the tranny option and you'll see that the auto costs 500-1500 more than the manual. That cost gets added to the price of the car. You can even go to edmunds.com and see what an AT adds as far as value to a car.

absolutely untrue. KBB.com and other 'blue books' dont represent the market value. Plain and simple, the 5 speeds are more desired, since most of the people looking to buy a DSM are into performance vehicles. The ONLY reason I bought my 95TSi auto was because it had 67k miles for $6000 two years ago. The guy had lowered his price $2000 because he had lots of people come look at it that didnt want it 'cuz its an auto. I had the same experience a few months ago when I was trying to sell it. MARKET VALUE doesnt equal retail "book" value.

I have to agree with 16G TSi
5 Speed Manual Cars were once looked at as a non luxury item, but today, especially younger kids, desire a 5 speed over an automatic car. If you think doing an A/T > M/T swap is going to lower your cars value... you're simply nuts, but at the same time entitled to your own opinion.
In my eyes, I'm doing my swap as we speak, and after this, this cars ALWAYS going to be in my life. Why do a swap, put the money into it, and man hours and then worry about value? For those of you though that worry about the value, i'd say go with the swap.
Seriously, think about this...
You tune your auto talon or eclipse, you put an ad up to sell it, people look at it...
You: Yeah man! 98PSi Turbo, 140" RIMS, Spoiler that hits god in the face, enough Nitrous to blow up Iraq and $40,000 worth of inner components... but it's auto.
Wouldn't you feel slightly dumb (of course in my blown out of proportion example I may get a few laughs)? The person looking at your car, of course if they were into racing/performance, would probably leave with a headache. I dunno... I may be wrong but then again, the eclipse and talons are sporty looking cars... for a girl who wants to put Girlie Girl racing stickers on her car auto is fine, but to 99.9% of the population, they'd prefer stick.
To any Board Admins that may be reading this and anyone interested... I'm building a VFAQ Site and HUGE Tutorial on both: A/T > M/T conversion and Going about non-turbo to turbo. If you want to link to it or read it when it's complete, contact me.
Anyway... I'm going to sleep, goodnight, goodmorning, good afternoon, whatever time it is when you're reading this.
Peace Out!

its all about preference.
if you care to put the time and effort in then by all means go ahead.
It's just like the N/A eclipse debate.
Some people say just sell it and get a turbo while others say keep the 420A base and boost it.
However there is fairly good logical reasoning for turboing a 420A.
its your decision.

I agree Infury, I bought my NT AT for 5 grand I had been looking for around 2 months for a DSM, and found mine it had 94k on it but a new engine with only 22 grand on it so I knew the engine was in good condition and would respond well to mods etc seeing as how it was a fairly new engine, I've put a little over 2 grand into the car now, and I'm putting my turbo in around December, I said it before in a post that I'm not looking for 12 second time slips, I'll wait till I'm out of college for that. Right now all I want is something that looks nice and can spank ricer kiddies left and right. I'm getting a stage 1 kit, and upgrading the internals some before upgrading to stage 2, there was a local kid with a stage 2 HRC kit and could only boost to 6psi because of his engine being old and not built. Pretty pointless to spend 3500 on a car that cant boost over 7-8psi. Stage 1, upgrade internals, then upgrade to stage 2. Thats my plan, I love my car, and I've already put money into it, selling it for something else is stupid. True enthusiasts work with what they have, not whine about what they COULD have. Just my .02

Yeah a lot of people say it's not worth it. Persoanally I think it is and has been proven by some people who have done it. Also people with FWDs shouldn't say how cheap it is. It's a lot more expensive and there's a lot more work in the AWD.
Justin Gabrius did a 2G AWD auto to 5psd swap. He didn't think it was that hard. He explained it to me and showed me a all the pictures and instructions he wrote. He got the all the parts used for $2000. I was really impreased as to how easy everything just bolted up on the 2G. Even the pedals seemed to be a piece of cake. He said the swap was 1000 times easier then having to move all he's mods over to a new car. Not to mention selling it and refiniancing a new one.
If you're going to do this, don't expect for somebody else to do it for you. Not many shops are going to do such a job. Just do the research, get the parts and do it. But like it was said earlier. There's very little point on BSing weather it's worth it or not. If you don't know if it's worth it, then chances are it's not for you.

I spent $1500 and 14 hours converting my car to a m/t only to switch it back a year1/2 later. Make sure it is the choice you want to make, the hardest part of the whole swap is getting the clutch/brake pedal assembly in place. The pattern for the clucth m/c was already stamped in the firewall from the factory on my 91. It may be wiser to just sell your car especially if it is a 2G(higher value) and get a m/t car.

So has anyone personally done this as to give me some more input. I am seriously considering having this done to my GSX. I TOTALLY miss my 5-speed 99 GS-T I gave up 3 months ago. I don't know how much longer I will be able to handle having an automatic car. Not much longer, and this car has way too much time and stuff on it to buy a 5 speed GSX and convert it all over. What kind of suggestions would you guys have as to the best place to get all of these parts for the swap in 1 place?

This thread is kinda like some one pushing me off the high dive when I was 5. I have found what I think is a really nice 2nd gen with good miles and a great body/interior.
But as the story goes it's an auto. I did get to take it for a drive tonight and it wasn't bad but it wasn't great either. I will deal with the guy a little and see what I can do. I might be pm'n some people soon for some help! Thanks for the info
