I'm new to this forum, and I've recently become interested in DSMs. I am currently in the process of looking for a GSX, and I found one, but it's an automatic, which doesn't drive me crazy.

I like manuals, as you have control of the engine, and you can control how fast your launches are. But, I've read a few threads in here about Shift kits and whatnot, and am confused.

Can a shift kit make an auto launch just as quickly and efficiently as a manual?

Please, give me any feedback you can on this. I'd appreciate it.

A shift kit won't help you launch an AT, it will help it shift faster and harder through the gears. You can also upgrde your End clutch. You will need to upgrade your torque converter if you want to really launch your AT DSM. There are a couple of companies tha sell them for DSM's. Do a search. An Auto is actually way easier to launch than a manual. With an AWD you shouldn't have any problems. Here is a Video of a fellow AT DSMer with an upgraded TC.

Would an equivalent car, in manual, still have the advantage after doing such upgrades?

A manual wouldn't need these upgrades. They would only need a clutch upgrade and then they'll spank up an auto.:) Don't get me wrong an Auto can still put up a fight if they have the upgrades listed above. Also, auto's don't lose boost when they shift. Once the boost goes up it stays up.:P

A side note: look at the DSM Club DC area track times and notice number 1 on the list.

Also, note the AT beside the GSX and the 60' and of course 1/4 time.

Ouch.

A properly setup auto can launch just as hard as a maunual. Ross has pulled 1.5s 60fts on he's car with the billet TC. And my best is a 1.70 while spining a lot.

Sorry about that comment-- I couldn't resist. Right after I wrote it I saw in another thread where you were talking about trying to get rid of your car for a turbo one. You'll be much happier-- even with an A/T... :)
