Anyone have any experience with the idle speed controller on the 1.8L engine?

My dealership said the ISC is bad and need to be replaced. It idles around 1200 - 1400 RPM. He said the engine is suppose to idle around 700 RPM.

How hard is it to replace this part?

thats what the dealer says. r u sure thats whats bad? or did he just say, ur idle is high, ur isc is dead? most likely what happened is ur throttle body is sticking. thats what happened to mine. unless u know for sure that that is the problem.

On the 1.8 there are 2 parts to the ISC. The motor can be tested with a 6 volt battery. The sensor is tested with an ohmmeter. If you have already tried to set the idle properly you need to find out which part is bad. Neither part is hard to replace. The Haynes manual is pretty good on test procedures. If you need more info just ask.

Both pieces are extreamly easy to replace, I would highly suggest doing it yourself. Also the pieces are expensive. The servo part (motor part) is @$230. I dunno how much the other part is but im sure its not cheap. Good luck with it, the idle seems to be the biggest problem with 1.8s.

If you haven't tried to reset the idle with the Idle set-screw, I suggest you do it before buying a new ISC motor. The Haynes manual kicks ass for the 1.8L tech stuff. It's basically word for word. Very easy to follow. Don't let a mechanic rape you on the price of something you can do yourself pretty easily.

I have to agree the 1.8L idle just plain sucks lol

He said the ISC motor is bad . . . because the idle is around 1400, instead of 700. . .

Yes! I need more info . . .

1) How do I test the motor with a 6 volt battery?

2) How do I test the sensor with an ohmmeter?

3) How do I set the idle properly?

Sounds like I need to pick up a Haynes manual today.

1. Unplug the motor connector and connect wires from the battery to the terminals, watching to see if the linkage moves
reverse the wires to try the other way. If it moves when current is applied it works. 6 volts only more will kill it!

2. unplug the position sensor. The resistance between terminals 2-3 should be 4K~6K ohms. The empty one is #1.

3. The rest is too much to list here the manual is very detailed on this procedure. The whole thing is like half a page and I don't type much at all. Also the illustrations help a lot.

go to autozone or napa or whatever is near you, buy the haynes guide to your car. it has a complete indepth explanation on how to do this procedure, i had to fix my isc too, it was a big help, pictures and everything.

Thanks. I have both the Chilton and Haynes manual now. The Haynes was a little bit harder to find than the Chilton. Overall, I like the Haynes manual better. I also noticed that the Chilton manual was printed by Haynes . . . weird.

Anyway, I replaced the ISC motor this past weekend. The original ISC motor was just on the verge of being bad. However, the good ISC motor did not totally fix the problem. Because after I adjusted the idle to 750 RPM, whenever I turn on any accessory, the RPM would get dragged down.

Looking at the ISC motor, I noticed that it was not moving. Since this motor is a good one. It must be something else. 8-( Not sure what it is yet. I will have to look into it again this weekend.

Anyone has had this problem before?

check your alternator, sounds like it may be going, eh.. also get the battery checked, low voltages can cause things like that to happen when u put more load on it.
