View Full Version : Power lock doesnt work

:( I already tried looking in the archives for this with no luck
The window lock and both power windows works fine, but the lock doesnt work. It doesnt open or close. I hear a click in the center consol (ECU???) I checked the power lock fuse and it was fine. When I pluged it back in I heard the lock actuator making a noise, so juice is flowing. I figured it was a bad actuator (drivers side) I went down to the Mitsubishi junk yard and bought one and tried it out. Same thing?!?! Could it be the power lock switch???
Is the power locking system independent from the drivers or passangers door... I guess Im asking is that if one fails (driver or passanger) then they wont work at all. If so then do I need to change out the passanger side??
Im lost as to where to start or is it somethign else???? please help

Try looking for blown fuses...

There are two relays in the center console that are responsible for controlling the doorlocks on your car. The trigger colors are: brown/white for lock, and brown for unlock. These are negative trigger, so find them and tap a quick ground to each of them separately; and see if the doors lock and unlock. If they do, check for a ground signal appearing on these wires while flipping the switch. Use a computer safe testlight. If the doors don't lock and unlock while grounding those two wires, you have a control problem; and it will be very hard to cure.

Drivers side is the brain of the two... hmmm actually I cant verify this for locking now that I think about it.... if you unplug the PCB for the drivers side door (inside the panel) the passenger side now has no control over the window on their side as its power passes through the drivers side PCD due to the window lock swithc.... I'm thinking the doors didnt work euither when this was done.. but I cant verify that from memory....
however one common problem with things int he doors, is dirtyh plugs/connectors, if nothing else works take your panels off and clean the connectors running to the solenoids... its acommon thing for the windows... dont see why the locks would be much different in that asepect....

"Drivers side is the brain of the two... "
That is not correct. They ARE independant of one another, and if one isn't working; the other one still will. The relays in the center console control the doorlocks as I described earlier. I have the Wire Magic program, and have been installing alarms for 13 years.
I have never seen a dirty doorlock connecter cause malfunction.

my doors have same problem, i push lock, i hear a click, nothing..
now nothing happens when i push lock.....
kinda sucks cuz i have remote start/remote locks but whats the point if i need the key? maybe some day ill break down and take it to satan

As a DC electrition the soution to this problem is very simple, I had the same problem on one of my DSM's,
Soultion- Buy a 2 wire aftermarket actuator and two relays, set in the actuator like you would on a car the doesn't have one, ( somewhere on the manual locking linkage ) if you wish you can ether leave in the stock actuator or atemt to put the aftermarket in its place, how ever the aftermarket will prob. be much larger.
Then wire in the relays- First find your negitive triger out puts, ether from you driver side kick panel or from your aftermarket keyless entry/alarm, run these two wires to post # 85 on both relays, ( one wire on a relay ) then wire post 86 and 87 on both relays to a constant possitive +, ground the center post ( 87a ) then post 30's on both relays will be your output to the new actuator.
This is called C type reverse polarity used for 2 wire acuators.
Since the the locks on DSM's are factory set up parallel you only have to be concerned with the driver side. as for the other will follow the leader. ( considering the fact that it is in working order ) If the second actuator is bad too, just put a second one in the other side and run the two wires over to the pre wired relays on terminals 30.
Cost.. Door lock actuators $10 to $15
Relays $3 to $5
Maybe a little wire $5
top total with 1 actuator = $30
Questions on electronics ? PM me I'm a DC electrition God.. ;)

Eh this is twice now you've twisted my words around, if you would have quoted the rest of that sentence...you would read, I cant verify it for the LOCKS but for the WINDOWS I know that is how it works...
quote whats relevant, not what suits you at the time...

Don't post when you don't know. He wasn't asking about the windows.

I offered advice regarding his problem, sorry Im not perfect like you... in the future I'll defer all electronics posts to you via PM... happy?

Not tryin' to start a war. After all, we're all in the same DSM family!

I think the DSM door locks are shitty...
My old RS never wanted to do what i wanted them to.
And my car now, the drivers side is hard to lock (takes a few trys to get it locked) and my passenger sides makes the loud awful noise that i need to check out.

Steveo....I had the EXACT same thing happen...
had to press the lock button a few times to get it locked.....then one day...IT DIDNT FUNCTION!!!
djdigitaldeath....I tried follwing your instructions on wiring, but you lost me on a few things like
"First find your negitive triger out puts"
"run these two wires to post # 85 on both relays, ( one wire on a relay ) then wire post 86 and 87 on both relays to a constant possitive +, ground the center post ( 87a ) then post 30's on both relays will be your output to the new actuator"
Thanks for the help!

What i mean by find your out puts- Our cars are negitive trigger lock motors, (type B) this means that the lock switch sends out a negitive battery signal to the power locks to turn one direction or the other ( lock/unlock ). You need to find these wires to hook them up to the relays. both of them are about 18 to 20 gauge wire, The UNLOCK wire will be brown with a white stripe, the LOCK wire will be Brown, you might also see little silver dashes on them. they are also normaly running side by side. when searching for them you will need a test light, connect the alagator end to a constant 12+ wire then probe the wires that you think should be the lock wires, when probeing hit the lock and or the unlock on the switch it should light up the test light for as long as you hold the switch.
This is how you locate the lock wires and test them. can be one of the hardest things in the job.
Places to look- once again i would look in ether the driver side kick panel or the the pass. side.
If you have a really hard time finding them just take them from the switch in the door. they of course have to be there ;)

I may have to draw out the relay wire diagram, i can understand writen intructions can be hard to understand unless you use relays all the time.
Pictures work better for some people;)
