Guys i'm planning on buying a turbo timer this weekend for my 91 GSX. my question is how good do these things work?
i'm really concerned if its really going to shut off at the time i set it too. i don't want to walk out of my car and the car stays on while i'm inside doing what ever:D, (are they reliable??). also, lets say i get out of my car and i'm inside my house or where ever, and someone trys to steal the car after i turn the ignition off, does the timer know this where it will activate something for the car to shut off??? (how reliable is that??). i usually stay in the car and wait 2-5 min before shutting down, but somedays i might be running late to work and i can't be sitting around so the timer comes in handy:D. and also what brand would you reccomend??? so what what are the pros & cons?? thanx in advance...

I've had A'Pexi TT for over a year now - not a sigle problem. Does what it is suppose to do!

As you can see from my signature I have a Greedy Turbo Timer. I love it. I didn't install it, came with the car when I bought it.
To answer your questions, yes it is reliable and yes it does have a way of shutting down the engine if say someone jumps in the car after you get out. Mine is attached to the parking brake.
As you probably know to use a turbo timer you must leave the car out of gear. To keep it where you parked it you must set the parking brake. (I know you know this but just in case) If the timer is hooked into the wiring for the parking brake light in your dash, when the parking brake is disengaged the circuit is cut and power to the timer is cut. In effect shuttting down the timer and the engine. It's that simple.
Plus its cool to walk away from your car and people tell you your car is still running. You just turn to them and say "I know, the car will shut itself off", and watch the dumbfonded look come across their face.

I have the Greddy turbo Timer.I've had no problems. It works just it's supposed to.I to use to sit in my car and got tired of during that. All turbo timers should have a speed sensor wire.On the Greddy its purple. It originally goes to the ECU to sense speed after you cut the car off.So people can't drive away.
What you can do is hook the wire(speed sensor) up to your clutch switch(just above your clutch). After you turn your car off.You can just lightly push the clutch and your car WILL shut off..This is just another option if you don't want to mess with the ECU.

"ahh yo whats up with the car still running???" LOL.
anyway sounds like its good enough for me. i havn't heard any compliants from any one yet so i'm guessing they work fine. i'm going to order the HKS timer too.

Thats a good idea. was it hard to install? i might have someone else do it for me if i see its to complicated. i don't know jack about t/timers. don't want to screw up the installation.

It's stupidly simple. Just disconnect the ignition wiring harness, plug in the new harness that goes with the turbo timer, plug in the ignition wiring harness into that. The only other thing is the E-brake wire, which is underneath the center console. Just tap into that and you're done!

If you are getting HKS - get type I - it also works as Rev/speed meter - you'll have shift light, digital speed output, and fun for accellerarion mesurments : 0to60, 1/4 etc. I know, cuz I have A'Pexi rev/speed meter - and it is fun (and more precize than G-tech IMO).

I believe DSM shop has it for $150 - that's how much I paid for the Apexi rev/speed meter alone.

I have the HKS Type 1. That thing kicks a$$. I get to play with all the timing functions that makes any road a track. :D
As for install it was easy. Just time consumming. I picked mine up for $120 plus ~15 for the harness. I got mine new in box from a guy who didn't need it after he blew his engine in his stealth.

Did it also had a harness for the REV and SPEED ECU taps?

Yep. I believe it was only 2 wires to the ecu and 1 to the e-brake. After that it was all plug and play.

Just remember, if you have an alarm the alarm WILL NOT arm itself unless you change the alarm's 12v switched from the IGN to the ACC and wire the TT up normally...

Oh, ok .... same thing is Apexi TT and Rev/Speed - too bad I spent twice as much for both of them :( As a matter of fact, I'm seriously thinking about selling my Apexi's and buy and HKS typeI :) .. but I might end up being to lasy to rewire everything :)

Live and learn. I've bought many a thing that I found out later I could've gotten the same basic thing cheaper. It sucks. :(

i hate to burst the bubble here, but i have a hks type 1 and i bought it used in great shape. it worked and was the best for 2 weeks but now when i turn off the key the engine shuts off and the timer doesnt keep it running. everything about it still works, it still counts down and flashes when i turn the key off but doesnt keep the engine running. does anyone no if its broke now or if mabby the harness plugs came a slight bit loose. i dont think they did , i think the thing just stopped working. i dont know how long it was used before i bought it. has this happen to anyone else?

The purple wire goes to the speed sensor signal on the ecu, I believe it is pin 86 but check vfaq.com just to make sure. Also the brown wire goes to the parking break, just pull up the console and splice it in to that wire and you are set.

will it do the 1/4 mile and speed on a 1g? I read somewhere that the speed sensor isn't the same on the 1g's so they couldn't do anything with the speed?

i never had one. my life isnt that hectic where i cant sit for a minute or two and watch my egt. id rather buy something else for my car.
i also heard a story on here about some guy who worked in a shop. they had a worked turbo teg and the timer was incorrectly installed. needless to say, the car ran for hours and the fans shut down....engine was toast after that incident.

He probably loves his ebay parts because he "just installed" it, ie it hasn't had time to break yet.

Not all ebay parts are shit, bov's, tubing, and crap like this is just fine off of ebay, not everything needs to be hks or greedy. We all have 15 year old cars that break down alot, who wants to spend $300 on a $30 part

THAT reasoning is why your car is broke. No, these parts are not okay, adn the reason that they are so expensive is because of the R&D that has proven these pieces from folks like JMF, Greddy, and Autometer to work CORRECTLY, and not FAIL, and then kill your car, is why you pay that much for them. Don't go talking out your ass when you clearly have no idea of what you're saying.

Ebay parts are 50/50 its a toss up. It depends who you get your stuff from and what items you pick up. Megan started off as a ebay company just like ssauto but look at them now. SSauto is halfway down the tubes while megan is making their way into every vender just like OBX. I personally wouldn't trust ebay electronics because, some of them look like straight setup jobs for suckers , as well as their turbos(t66) spec turbo's for less than $500 ehh idk about that either. But a 2g intake, hell why not, I got one and the damn things like a charm. Why spend 200+ dollars for an intake and yes some of their universal IC piping is on point. It all depends. Some people have great luck and other got shit luck. When it comes to turbo timers, you can wait 1-2 minutes to shut your car off depending on turbo size and wether or not its just oil cooled or both coolant and oil. You've prolly lost more time in your life that your never getting back reading this thread then sitting in your car during its cool down period lol.

+1 for no ebay electronics and +1 for 2g intake pipe, fits great.
I always tell people who haven't been around my car that the keys are still in it when the turbo timers on and that they can drive it. When they get to the door and see its locked you either make fun of them now or freak out like you locked your keys in your car. : )
