Yea do your research, there is a lot to learn.:)
But something like an air filter and an intake pipe is easily put on without any effort and the car wont need to be tuned.
Tuning a DSM usually involves a Type of Fuel Computer, Most people use Apex'i S-AFX. An Exhaust Gas Temperature gauge, which will tell you at what temps aproxx. you are burning at. This will tell you if your rich(too much fuel) or to lean(not enough fuel)
0xygen Sensor gauge is used, but usually not totally accurate to follow. And to fine tune you will need a Data Logger, a lot of people use www.pocketlogger.com, or DSMLink(dont need a fuel computer with this) This is the a good choice for a 2G.
Happy Reading:)

Oops, didnt see that, thanks
I also forgot to mention what to tune for....
People like to see max 18-24 degrees of timing, some people think that 24 is too much, but I dont agree. Timing should go up linear throughout the RPM range.
Less than 6 counts of knock should suffice.
While shooting for EGT's of 900 C. at the end of third gear(Drag Tune)

I'm a noob too, just got my datalogger this weekend. It shows like 40 degrees of timing advance at WOT and 0 knock, is that too much timing advance? Thanks!

If you have 40 degrees at wot you car will last 2 more days, that is a number when you let off.
You would have to lie very badly with a safc to get timing like that!
Like -50% across the board.

That is very hard to believe.

Tuning? What's that?
All you do is throw a bunch under the hood, get a bunch of people to lift the car, shake it around, and presto! 9 second AWD car!

I'm probably reading it wrong, I'll datalog some more runs today to see whats up.

I used to see 32 degrees of timing on my Pocketlogger when I had my T-25. What is normal degrees of timing with a Small 16G turbo I should be seeing?
Stock Injectors.....IC.....Exhaust

time to raise the dead again...
question 1...if I'm getting 6-14 degrees of timing at WOT, shouldn't I be richening it up? i thought timing was pulled due to knock caused by lean conditions...
question 2...if that's right, then y would a guy with 40 degrees of timing be at -50%?
i think i've got my info all screwed up...AGAIN! damn i wish i were as savy as the rest of you guys...slowly but surely i guess...

aright im gonna try to answer your questions, but im not 100% totally sure.
1. Timing gets pulled when the ecu(knock sensor) detect knock. The car can knock due to various reasons. Maybe something is loose, or crappy gas, or maybe if you are running too rich, also causes the car to knock.
2. I think the numbers that he wrote are prolly misinterpreted. but if that was the case, then leaning with the afc will result in more power, correct? Leaner=More power, but its also more dangerous.

from what i gathered, u want to be as lean as u can without as little knock as u can. eliminating knock is #1, so u richen it up until there is little to no knock...or if there is no knock then u lean it out until u see knock and then add a little fuel to make the knock go away. but yeah, if ur running too rich u dont get as much power, so lean it out until the point u see knock...is this right?
I logged my car last night...just wondering about timing...at low rpm WOT it was really low, like 4-6 degrees advance. but at the end of the gear at WOT it was more like 15. so that being said do u just say u have 15 degrees of timing advance? or does having 15 degrees mean 15 throughout the entire range of rpms?
I added fuel to get more timing advance...ended up with 18-19 at the end of the gear at WOT.
