I was thinking about undercoating my car before winter... Anyone under coat there car before? I could use some tips because I never have before... What do you undercoat? Everything or just the metal body parts?

Whoops sorry about the miss spelling in the title... Anyways doesn't anyone care for the body of their car or just get it rust away?

I just got done doing alittle rust proofing myself. I used Dupli-color Professional underbody coating, found it at AutoZone. Most DSMs came from the factory with a good undercoating and galvinized body parts so they are pretty good at not rusting. I jacked up the car and put it on stands and took a air diegrinder and a wirewheel to all the worn parts that were starting to rust. Pay attention to the seems underneath the gastank area, the front of the car should be fine, cuz DSMs leak so much oil it's like a natural rust proofer:) Take a good look under the the ground affect areas, sometimes they become clogged and hold water in them rusting out the panels. Also check the areas where you tend to jack up the car, alot of times it chips off the undercoating. I sprayed the stuff everywhere:D Where there was rust I coated, where thare was potential for rust, I coated. Stuff I used worked really well, made the inside of my wheel wells look new. I also used black silcone on all the ground affect seems to help keep water and salt out. But DON'T block the drain holes in the bottom of them and check to make sure the drain holes in the doors are clear. Mine were clogged by the window molding that had worn off the track and settled in the bottom of the door covering the drain holes. Hope this helps.
BTW, don't undercoat the exhaust, instead paint it with high temp paint like I did. I know, I know I'm an overkill kind of guy:rolleyes:

I'm into rust proofing but I don't use undercoating. I use a product called Consel Clear M3 from Lasting Paints in Baltimore, MD. This is a rust proofing oil. Its not permanent, it has to be renewed every several years.

I raise the car and put it on stands. Then mask off the exhaust and wheels using garbage bags. The oil is applied using an automotive paint gun set to pressurize the can. This goes fast. I try to get all the fender wells and underbody back to the rear bumper but not the engine or suspension. I figure the suspension is never going to rust out. I also try to get as many of the internal cavities of the car as possible.

I have done this on both of my DSM's. I can't remember the brand but it comes in a red can. 2 cans should do the trick, I even did part of my fender wells. NY winters suk!

Well, when buying jack stands buy big. The ones I have are rated at about 6 tons each - about forty dollars a pair. One jack will hold up two cars. :P However, large jack stands have a large footprint and they don't tip.

Remember, jack stands don't wear out. They are a lifetime investment.

One other thing I should mention - if spraying enough material to coat the bottom of a car - whatever you use - you don't want to be breathing that stuff in. Use a painter's mask with charcoal canisters.
