Up-graded AWD Center Differnetial

This is a little difficult to report on since it doesn’t change performance. I just got a 4-spider gear center differential for my 95 Talon TSi AWD installed. The stock center differential transmits power through two gears. The guys at SpeedDesign add two more gears in the same housing which greatly increases the power handling ability. At $550 this is a lot cheaper than something like a Quaifi. So far I very pleased knowing I can dump the clutch on launch and not have to worry about leaving the center diff. at the lights.

I had the guys at SpeedDesign install it while I watched. One of the guys in the local club did do it himself. You remove the passenger front tire and fender splash shield to get access to the transmission. You drain the transmission and remove the “rear” cover which faces the wheel well. Then you pull off the shift fork and 5th gear. Then you remove the transaxle case adapter and pull out the viscous coupling and the center differential. Remove the bearing from the old differential and install it on the new unit. Install the new center differential and reverse the disassembly process. The cases are sealed with RTV sealant. The biggest issue for a DYI is pressing the bearing on/off the center differential. Now that I have seen it done I might try it myself, but the thought of taking the transmission apart is intimidating at first. It took about the guys about 3 hours to complete the job. You will probably need the shop manual for reference.
