View Full Version : My car won't move...

Ok, here's what happened. I blew the rear main seal in my car. (94' 1.8 Eclipse) I am not too familiar with Automatic transmissions and neither are the guy's who helped me fix it. Well, we put everything back together and I had trouble turning the motor when was bolting the flex plate and the torque converter, but I got all three bolts put on. I put the axle's on and tried to go for a drive to test it. But when I finished backing out of the driveway (slopes down) I put the car in drive and it didn't go anywhere, put it in reverse and didn't go anywhere. Here's my question. Does the Torque Converter have to go in a certain way or can you just put it in the tranny? I just droped it in there and bolted it back up. Does anyone else have any idea's what might be wrong? Also, I only put 3 quarts of ATF in there, but the dipstick marks it way way too high. The shop manual call's for 6.5 or something like that. Is it cause the fluid from the Tourque Converter didn't drain? but if it didn't drain then why doesn't the car move? I'm just baffled by whatever is happening to this car.

Was the rear main seal put in right? Was it put in evenly? I had a hard time having mine even, but you just have to use a wooden block with a hammer to get them in. As for your car not going anywhere it probably is torque converter, as for what way it needs to go in, I would say just have the golden plate facing toward the transmission, and turn it where it bolts up evenly and perfect. Nothing else really can be wrong, it just sounds like it isn't even dropping into gear.

Yeah, the seal was put in right, I did it with the back end of the screw driver and I don't leak oil anymore. My problem is that the car seems that it won't go into gear, like you said. That's how I had it done. I lined up the flexplate to the Torque converter and bolted it back up. I think I will just give up and take it to a tranny shop :(

Did you put the torque converter all the way in when you place it inside the tranny like fast1.8sohcDSM said??

Well, all we did was just put it so everything would line up, but I didn't turn the TC in any way. I found out from talking to some people that on most A/T when you put the TC in, you have to turn it till it clicks a couple of times. (I didn't do that), but they all say..."I'm not too familiar with DSM A/T, so I don't know if you had to do that.
