Guys I am thinking of building a custom intake for the 1.8L instead of spending $200 for an Injen. I don't have my car back yet so let me ask you this. I am running a K&N and would like to keep the upper portion of the aircan(the part holding the filter and the MAS). What are the measurements on both ends of the pipe(from the filter to the manifold)? Also what whould you guys use to build this thing? The stock piping is cracked and also is too short where the filter hangs freely in front of the radiator fans which I don't like. So I am planning to make a curved pipe to rest the filter nside of an already made box like it is supposed to. Thanks.

Also I did search but most are for 2.0 engines. A lot of the replies are also a little vague. I just need a clear explanation.

You'd have to keep that, you can't just throw out the MAS, that plate has to remain. Anyway, I just ran into my basement to measure that for you, and the length of the pipe along the outside is just about 18 1/2", that's with the bends included, but if you're going to bend it much more, figure for how far the pipe will go after each "non-stock" bend, then make the pipe that much longer...but the stock "pipe" is 18 1/2" along the outside (the part facing the fender, that starts at the very back of the plenum, and ends at the rear portion of the MAS plate, closest to the rear of the engine bay). Hope this helps.

Okay thanks man. What would the the best to use for the piping? PVC?? Also how am I going to attach the ends (on the MAS end and the manifold end) to what they need to be on? PVC can't simply be clamped on. Help me here guys and thanks.

yeah, I'd use pvc pipe...and for the clamping, get rubber collars/sleeves, whatever you wanna call them, that will fit over the pipe, then use 2 clamps, just like the injen intake.

Thanks a lot man. How big will be efficient for the pipe size? 3"???

No problem man, glad I could help. I'd say 3" to 3 1/2" would be sufficient, I'd go 3 1/2" at most.

Your bay gets very hot - above the rated temperature for PVC, which gives off toxic gasses when it starts to melt. If you do that, you'll never pass a safety inspection. The best way to go is to take your car to a custom muffler shop. Bring them the original peice and have them bend you a new one in that shape. They generally don't charge much for a piece of pipe. It'll cost you less than buying an intake, it'll look much cleaner, it'll last longer than PVC, and it won't kill you if your car overheats. If you need couplings to bolt it to the TB and the MAS, they're available on ebay all the time as "turbo hose" or "turbo couplings".

Okay thanks for preventing me from dieing ginsu...lol Anyway I will go talk to a local guy here to fabricate me one when I get a muffler put on...the current one isn't going to work with my kit. One question though...wouldn't the metal absord heat making the air hotter? That defeats the purpose then doesn't it? Any way of sheilding it from the heat while making it look good?

I don't think so. Just don't paint it black and you should be in good shape. If you buy an aftermarket one, it's going to be alluminum anyway, right? :)

Just make sure the filter isn't behind the radiator fans. My $200 Injen is worthless now since the fans rob all the air from the MAS, causing idle problems. I've had to resort to stock on my intake :(

That is what I plan on doing. I made a custom air box that is open at the top. In other words the filter lays where the aircan used to with this custom one. Now all I need is to get the piping made and painted.

I used PVC for months and never had any problems.

That doesn't make it safe! LOL What I've been told by the recon team here, who examines cars for reconstruction permits (safety inspections for modded cars) is that engine bay temperatures can rise above the rated breakdown temperature for PVC, which gives off nasty poisonous gasses when it breaks down. Inspections may be different there, but if there's another way, I'd take it. But that's just me.

Let me know the details and specs of this so I can see about doing it as well. :)

I just thought about something. What in the world do I do about the nipple that the hose from the top of the valve cover slips on?

You don't REALLY need it to go to the intake pipe. It's just an air intake for crankcase ventilation, and it was cheaper and quieter for them to just run a hose to the intake pipe. You can pick up a breather filter for about 10 bucks to put over that side of the valve cover. This will actually keep your throttle body cleaner, because you won't have oil getting in there crudding it up.

If you're really worried about it, or your state has extremely anal emmissions laws, you can pick up a nipple with an NPT thread at any hardware store and a matching NPT tap and just tap it into your intake pipe. I would just pick up a breather and not worry about it. It looks a lot better. That's what I have :)

Great! Once again thanks for clearing that up.

i just made an intake out of a 2g rs intake. i think that if you want to remove your stock air can you can almost leave the pipe alone. you will have to cut a little off of the end that goes into the throttel body but other than that i think that you can almost leave it alone. if you want to keep the air can you can trim the other end of the pipe so that it will fit in the provided space. there will be fitent issues with the battery but i am having little problems with mine so far and there is a sizeable gain in low to mid rane power. ill post some pics soon i hope
