I am buying a car that has problems going into 2ng gear. When I tried to shift into second, it just doesnt go. The person I'm buying it from thinks its the synchro. However the shifter seems really stiff and it grinds a little going into 3rd & 4th. So I thought the shifter cables might be sticking/not adjusted properly or the clutch might be shot. Do I need a new tranny or what?
Thanks,
Joe

Moved to Newbies Forum...
Most likely it is a syncro problem...

Yea I searched and read about that, but you see there are other things that go along with the problems so it might not be "just the synchros." I dont know what it is about the moderators on this board. Maybe your egos are too big or something.

Ok I just drove it home...
It goes into 2nd easier at a lower rpm. When it does go in, it goes in smooth. 4th Never grinds. Grinds in pretty much every other gear. Its hard to get into reverse.

If it goes into 2nd better at low RPM and not at high RPM then it's almost definitely a syncro problem. Other things to check for are worn/broken motor mounts which let the engine/tranny move too much during shifts, clutch pedal engagement height, and shifter cable adjustment both at the shifter plate as well as on the transmission.
Also, if you don't like the way this board is run you're welcome to pack up and go somewhere else.

Before you worry about synchros too much you should try something like BG synchroshift, the difference is just amazing. Mine still likes to give me crap going into second but not as bad as it was when I bought it (with80w90 in the tranny). If you can't live with it after this, then off to TRE it might have to go....
