Just like Quadcylla I don't know to much about sound. I'm looking to replace the factory speakers with something better, I've tried it once by installing pioneer speakers and I was very disappointed It sounded worse than stock... I can't throw anything in the back because I need that room for my R/C plane :) Please help I don't want to keep on buying and returning different speakers until I get the right ones :( - oh, and I currently have Sony CD 4x45.
Thanks!!!

Do you have a 1g or a 2g? If it is a 2g then you may actually be able to squeeze something in your trunk. I am in the process of building my system (in a 2g). In the hatchback there is a 3-4 in lip before the back seat. If you built a 3 inch false floor with 1 sub (either a 10' or a 12'), this would level the lip out. It would take some planning to hinge the false floor to be able to get to your spare tire. In any case, this scenario would not take up much space at all, leaving you plenty of room for you R/C planes. If this is more work than you want to do, simply replacing the stock speakers is much easier. When replacing your stock speakers, stay away from the cheapy cheapy speakers. On the other hand, I don't know what you are willing to spend on speakers, becase they can get very expensive... You could always get MB Quarts, but they are Really pricey. Myself, I like Boston Acoustics. They run about $150 for a pair of 5' coaxials, but they sound good. Hope this helps

If you have a 2G the rear 6x9s are pretty shallow. I used te MB Quarts DTC 169. They fit perfectly and have a good sound. They handle 60-140 watts and the freq response is 35-32000Hz. I don't remember how much I paid for them, but, I think it was around $140.

Only one word...KENWOOD!
Seriously though; I replaced all the factory speakers and stereo with a Kenwood system. Easy to do, no extra space taken up. Not too expensive;in my opinion. Sounds awesome. I'm not a fan of the big bass sound though... If you are looking for the heart-beat stopping bass sound, my system wouldn't satisfy you.
Also, replace the factory speaker wire with some good wire. The factory put in some real cheap wire for quality sound transmission. You also have to keep track of which wire is positive and negative. If you get them mixed up, sound quality is terrible.

As far as the rear 6x9's, just pound the metal in a little with a hammer. Only need about half an inch to clear almost any 6x9 speaker. Looking from the opposite side (wheel well) there is no visible bump or denting.
