Do you drive your DSM during the winter or do you put it away and get out the winter beater?

Sweet first vote!

Yeah I drive it in the winter, ground clearance sucks, but AWD donuts in open un-plowed parking lots is where it's at.:hail:

I drove my Talon last winter, and its all rusty now. The rear fenders and the inside door jams are rusted through :( This year i'm not driving it. Got my Parents 86 Audi 5000 Turbo for that :) Looking for a good body shop now to get my rust cut out and the car repainted. I'm having such horrid summer/talon withdrawls though.

Winter is hard on cars period and especially murder on our front ends so I decided to repaint the nose and retire it from winter duty. Our cars are starting to have a rarity factor and I'd like to keep mine looking near new. Yeah I miss the snow driving a little but I like even better the fact I don't have to wash the car all the time. I do still drive it on nice days but no more snow driving.

Yes, of course I drive it in the winter! But is sucks though because the car was in Cali a few years ago and in Florida a year ago and so you must understand how clean the body is... Yeah, lots of washing to keep the salt off...

LOL......I don't think there is any vehicle that's worse in the snow than a 2WD truck. The 4WD on my dad's ranger is broken, I tried to drive it once....it was fun in a parking lot but just retarded on the roads. If I stopped uphill at a light, forget it.

Nope.
Mine goes in the garage in November and comes out just in time for the first autox at the end of April. It's in storage now for its fourth winter. It's great - no rust, low miles, show room new (still smells like a new car) and I love it 10 times as much in the spring when I can finally drive it again :D !! It's like buying a new car every year.

Yea I know this feeling, but I just try to do a gravel train stop. Most semis stay back a ways then as the cars around them come to a stop they keep rolling, so do I. Sure it is quite often other cars have to dart into the open space in front of me just to stop in front of me. At least stopping like this should make the car hit the car behind me instead of me. ;)

This is the first year I'm driving the talon as I sold my grand prix this past summer. It is going to be a battle to keep the body looking as good as it is now. But it's fun to drive AWD in this instead of my FWD grand prix. Nothing like breaking all four tires loose and gliding around....

I'm a proud FWD snow traveler. I think a lot of people forget that you can accelerate better with an AWD but all of the cars STOP THE SAME! So don't go feeling too invincible in an AWD and get yourself into trouble. And yes, i'm jealous.

AWD rocks, just so long as you're careful around corners and get some decent tires. The generic, mismatched POSs that were on my car when I bought it, slid me into a parked car and crumpled my driverside door. This winter I'm getting some Dunlop Sport A2s and being a LOT more careful! :)

Winter is nice. It's the only time I can get my car to break the tires loose. :D Although, I've had my fair share of close encounters in the snow. I just need some more experience ripping around in it. All is well untill the car gets a little too out of hand. THen I just slide around and turn the wheel, and hope for the best.

I have had my 2g FWD Talon for 4 years now and have driven it through 3 winters but this year it is staying in the garage. I just started the more major modifications this past summer/fall and after a week of 10 degree mornings I decided to buy a second vehicle. It doesn't like to run real well at very cold temps until the motor warms up to operating temp. I think it has to do with the smaller spark plug gapping.

Anyways, I never really had a problem with traction in the winter due to the fact I had 4 snow tires on it. I have driven through snow deep enough to pack it against the nose of the bumper. I only ever got stuck twice and both times were at home.

I actually had to use reverse to keep from rear-ending a car at a 4-way stop once. The roads were glare ice and wet. I was only going about 25mph but when I touched the brakes I started to slide so I forced them to lock up and shifted into reverse and canned it. Missed the car by about 1 1/2".

I just decided it would be better to park the car in the winter and keep it nice longer since I have now spent as much in mods as what the car is worth (motor, wheels/tire, sound system).
I actually stooped as low as to buy a '94 Ford Ranger 4x4 SuperCab. I am NOT a Ford person but it was the right price so what the heck.

I've driven my FWD car every winter since I've had it and I have had no problems with it in the winter time in the middle of Ohio in the snow or ice. Last winter I even had mods out the wazzoo (and lowered) and I still had no problems. I drive on Nitto 450's 225 45R17 which are excellent All-season tires.

I laugh at the Mustang GT owner who lives across the street who is constantly stuck trying to get up the hill on our street every morning when there is snow or ice. Having FWD and low HP at lower rpms is the key. I almost think the lag with the Big16G turbo is actually helping out more with keeping the HP down low at the lower rpms.

But wintertime would probably would be more fun with an AWD car.

What's with the rust? My car is 7 years old and has virtually no rust on it. There are only 2 spots next to the rear hatch window underneath the black rubber seal.

I don't want to say that exactly cause I don't want any fellow DSMers hurt so I'll just say they'll rust away.;)

Every year I see more and more DSMs blow up also and get parted out so I figure in less than 10 years an AWD DSM will start to be a pretty rare car and '93-'94 models are already on the rare side.

I have an awd also and i would never even think about driving it in the winter the salt is horrible you can say i wash it all the time but youll never get all the salt off. It is cool that every year they get more rare because of people that do as soon as snow falls it goes in the garage. I made the mistake of driving one befor in the winter and the cancer took hold fast once you drive it in the winter once you might as well just keep doing it . the salt gets everywhere in the unibody in those little lips in the back fenders and all in the runner boards from where the water runs off your shoes and through the carpet. Ita malignant not sure if i spelled that right. My car is a 98 and has less than 40,000 miles in it so drive them up and make mine the only one left lol. What about YOUR insurance? That should be covered by the comprehensive part of your insurance. I have $0 deductible for that exact reason (or if someone decides to key may car). It also came in handy when I hit a large racoon at 70mph which did $1500 damage to my front end. Didn't cost me a dime to have it fixed. :D

I just got my Talon TSi AWD in Sep. The first one I've ever had. But I can say driving in a FWD is a breeze when it come's to snow especially if it's a m/t. Had a Honda Accord ran fine in the snow and a Eclipse 2.0 ran fine. Then made the mistake of getting a T-Bird almost killed myself. Just doing 4-5 360's in the middle of the freeway is fun especially when all you have to do is tap the gas and your gone.

It's my first winter with any car, let alone a FWD, so hopefully I'll find the limits of the car soon.

Make sure that you have a good set of snow tires all the way around the car.

They make a HUGE difference. I had driven my Talon the last 3 winters with snow tires and it seemed alright. I have since sold the snow tires and I have just a set of 1/2 worn all-season tires on the 16" wheels now. On Christmas eve I decided to take the car out since the roads were dry and the weather was OK. What a mistake! It started snowing a lot and but the time I went home there was 2-3" on the roads and I could hardly keep the car going straight down the road even at 30mph. I NEVER had that kind of problem when I had the snow tires on it. I guess that is what I get for underestimating "Mother Nature".

I drive my AWD all year round and its no big deal cause in vegas we dont really have a proper winter. Here I'd actually be more worried about driving my car in the summer cause running your car in 110+ heat all day cant be easy for the cooling system, prolly not good for anything actually.

I take my 16" wheels off and put a set of 14" Eclipse wheels and Michelin RainForce 4 tires on it (This is the factory size) and never have ANY PROBLEMS as long as I don't have to PUSH too much snow. AWD...Yes, and it is very fun in the snow. I have drove through a national forest gravel road and had to have the wipers on due to plowing snow with front of car.

The bad....Last summer I totaled my car and bought another like it. I parted my wrecked one out, and was very surprised how bad the car was eaten with rust. Rear bumper supports were hardly existant. Not to mention how hard it was pulling the suspension apart.

My theory is that they sit so low to the ground the accumulate road salt and grime more than other cars. From now on, I think I will take the truck to work on bad days.

She's my daily driver, of course I drive her in the winter. The plow trucks do a crappy job plowing here...but while everyone was digging their cars out, the GSX and I just charged through the snow like there was nothing to it! She's such a champ. The snow was level with the bottom of the door, and I loved the look on all those guys faces!

I purchased my red Talon TsiAWD new back in 1991. She has 87K miles on her and she has been garaged every winter since new. My white Talon TsiAWD and Corvette are also garaged every winter.
I will use the white Talon if my 4X4 SUV takes a dive in the winter.

I'm sure you are wondering why I store a all-wheel-drive car in the winter. Well, all the sand and salt on the roads is number one reason. Number two is the idiot drivers :chair: out there that can't drive in snow and crash into other cars. Number three, my red Talon is my baby. She is the first car I purchased new and she is mint. :D

Driving in the snow is great for building all those skills I'll need for rallycrossing in the spring...add on snow tires, not lowered, and the 1.8 and she makes a great FWD snow car

Drove from Syracuse, NY down I-81 through Scranton during a hell of a snowstorm and it was just me, some crazy salt trucks, and SUVs

Out in Idaho, driving from Boise to the mountains during a blizzard when all you could see what about 50' infront of you, now that is fun!

chuckz28
12-22-2006, 10:58 AM
How about yes in the snow and all but no AWD? Wish it was but its not so bad. I used to have to drive with the camaro in the snow. That will teach you to drive RWD real quick. lol. Even with weight in the back it was so bad the last year I did it that you could just sit there in drive not touching brake or gas and not go anywhere. I open the door to look at the rear tire and its just slowly spinning...on a flat parking lot. I didnt get to work that day and it was the last time I took that car in the snow.
The FWD talon does much better than the maro but its still no AWD.

Cali so not really a winter.. fwd sucks balls in the rain tho. I've had my car since feb so this is my first real winter I guess. The worst thing so far was a few weeks ago when I was leaving for school at 9am even tho I poured buckets of water on my car my windows were completely iced over still and my windshield iced as I drove off so I couldnt see anything! Only had it for one winter and hell yeah I drove it. Wanted to stay warm! DSM heat FTW! Unless we had more than a couple of inches of snow in which case the ole XJ got fired up. I love that old bitch.

Yes, unfortunately, it's my main transportation and I have no choice. My wife gets to drive the speed3 most of the time, and even that has to be driven in the slush. Eventually I'll get around to building a rust free, garage queen DSM that gets parked inside when it rains... Just not right now.

I almost crashed in mine a couple of times this past winter (driving a FWD ESi) but it's my only car, so its the only option I have. Still hoping to sell this one and get myself a TSi.

I store mine. South west Michigan salts the heck outta their roads so badly on a dry day the look white. Plus It's alot more fun jumpin snow banks in a 4wd truck.:)

That's half the point of owning an AWD DSM.

It's not like it's a collector or show car.

I Dont drive my GSX in the winter. :) I have a pretty sweet winter beater for that. 95 Impreza awd donuts! I would never bring my baby out though, too many problem with ny winters to ruin my dizzum.

I have to get out the beater cause the fact that i have only FWD 97 tsi talon and on the other fact is i dont like how my car would get salt on it. My car has never seen winter at all i keep good care of the car. Lot of people say that dsm are jink year around well guess what i prove them wrong when mine is the cleaniest fastest car out of all my buddies. Save the beautiful DSM drive tyhe beater during the winter.

I absolutely 100% refuse to drive mine in the winter. Granted I haven't even owned my current DSM through a winter yet, it is a California car which I so graciously transported to the wonderful state of Ohio. Once the first snow falls, she will be parked until there is no more. I won't even be taking her out on nice days because odds are, there will be salt still.

And just to be sure, I will be dropping the motor and tranny so I can't drive it lol:P. No really though, just cleaning up the bay a lot and doing a clutch, then hopefully fuel line from tank to rail and return before the next season.

I refuse to drive my GSX in the rain let alone the snow. The last thing I need some dumbass speeding along in his 2wd civic to lose control and smack into me. Only sun days with a zero percent chance of rain for my baby.
