How long have you owned your DSM? Or how long did you own your last DSM? :)

A more correct poll would ask of the years you've owned it how long has it been running?

Agreed. I combined my '93 Talon AWD and '93 GSX ownerships, also the GSX has a LOT of the Talon's parts so they're one in the same.

Well, considering that the average age of DSMtalk user is like 21, then we can predict the outcome of this one.

Well I've sucessfully competed at the local IDRC compititions a few times. Even won into the final 8 once. (almost twice) Bought the car in May of '95 and It is still my one and only daily driven car since. It's been in the shop for repairs all but a total of a few weeks. But It wasn't car problems all the time. It was either user error or ice storms that caught me by surprise.
I believe if you read enough stuff and talk to people about various things you can learn alot from everyones personal experience and learn to do preventive maintainance to your car for the most part. And the other times you can just do things yourself that can save you money. It helps to ask questions even if someone thinks it is a stupid one. Knowlege is power and I believe I have a fair share of it for not being a mechanic. Thanks to all who are quick to give a wise response and not a wise-ass one. ;)
Happy & safe driving to all.

Well after 8 years of blood, sweat, tears and a buttload of money (including racing fees, race gas, etc.) I'm gonna give up the car and racing for a while so I can concentrate on a house.

Maybe after a few years I'll rejoin the race scene and maybe buy another DSM or go with a Vette,Supra or maybe even a current WS6 Firebird.

It was fun but costly fun at that. I'm gonna hit the IDRC event here in Denver Sept. 7th and get some video of me running and hit a couple of club races and say bye-bye to my baby. :(

Yeah,I'll miss smackin' around V8 and an ocassional V10 and I can't believe the I've shaved off over 2.5 seconds off it's best stock time up here of 15.72@84mph and added nearly 19mph to it's trap.
When I bought it in '95 I never even intended on drag racing it or knew the potential I had in my hands. I just bought it as a sporty all year 'round car since I lived up in the mountains and just couldn't buy an SUV.

I actually was looking at SUVs at the time and accidently came across this perfect (well except for the dealer applied orange/silver pinstriping) '93 GSX with only 25k on it and I plunked down just under $12,500 and drove it home and thus began the oddesey of fun, headaches and some decent damage to the VISA but it was fun while it lasted and a real eye opener to turbo cars and the potential of all small 4 bangers and just because you have displacement it doesn't guarantee a win at the strip.
Horsepower and AWD has really added up the wins and it's kinda fun automatically being the underdog (or percieved as ;) )and laying the smack on some "classic" american muscle plus some current "muscle" cars.

Well. I have been putting in a full race engine in it since march '02, now. I had taken vacation time off and did a full engine swap in 9 days flat. Not bad I think. BUT. even though I primed and primed and checked things thrice, I managed to starve it in oil as the pressure never came up during it's 1st cold start up!!! I've been steamed about this since a lot of other things happend after I re-rebuilt it, too. ... If only I didn't have that initial problem, I would have done good at this years comptition and enjoyed it for many months now.. :( now I have to still finish it during the rest of the year in the cold to get it ready for next season. I now have a transmission problem and had continual oil leaks before hand. ARRGH! We'll see if all my time and $$ goes to any good use next year.

The guy who sold me my '97 GSX sold it because his wife was expecting and they needed to fit a baby seat in the car. Funny because my daughter's child seat fit fine in either my 1G or the 2G GSX.
In fact the kid loves the GSX "Make it go fast Dad!" she says.

I've owned at least one of them for just over three years (92 Eclipse), a couple years for two (92 Laser & rolled 93 Talon), just over a year for one of them (my 92 Talon/avatar) and two of them less than a year (93 Talon AWD project & 93 Talon AWD drivetrain donor). So I guess three years of DSM ownership... somehow it doesn't really seem that long!

HI, My name is Brian and I'm an addict.

My first addiction she was just a tease, 90 FWD Nt

7 years later my next addiction came, she was 90 FWD TSi

I have more DSM parts than I do clothes.
I have bought more parts than I can install.
I drive fast and recklessly w/o my seatbelt.
I have No Fear when my Eagle drives me.
I bath my engine with Mobile 1 Synthetic religiously
I can hear boost squeaks.

It's a maddening addiction. I spend more time touching my DSM than I do myself. I'm not afraid to come out of the closet thankx to you all. After 15 years both cars still get factory gas mileage. It's not what's on the outside that matters it's what on the inside. God Bless each and everyones DSM, God rest her sole 89-98. Let us not Forget!

Who are the 8 people that have '89, 90's, or real early '91's since new?

Steve

I would be one of those people. Started out with a 90 TSI. 3 Months later it got pummeled in a Illinois tornado by hail (Dents all over) useed the insurance money to get a 90 Eagle AWD and still have it. Now with one rebuild on the motor and trans and 291K on the body. :D

Bought a sexy 92 gs with a blown motor and a 91 laser rs-t for $500 in May.
The rs was a rust bucket with a good turbo motor, so i just swapped the engine and all that fun stuff in the gs and have had that ever since.
Finally put that away for the winter and picked up a super duper good condition 91 laser rs for a winter car.

I bought my first dsm (92 eclipse Nt) when I was 15 (so about 4 years now) Cuz I liked the looks and now Im addicted. I own two at the moment, I have three in my driveway right now and Ive owned about 6 of them since the first one. And every friend I have owns or has owned about 3 of em. DSMs are like crack cocaine the're addicting, expensive to keep, considered ugly by most, and you can always tell a user by the marks on our arms from working on em but man its hard to part with something oh so good.

I bought my '99 Eclipse RS in October 99 - had 17 miles then. I'm up to 149,610 as of today. I've been amazed with how few problems I've actually had with this car considering the very poor treatment I've given it. Now that I'm finally settled in a house with a garage I've finally started being able to take care of general maintenance things that have been neglected for a long time. Hopefully it'll last until my 1-yr old son can drive it...

I had a 90 AWD for 2-3 years, during college.

I just got rid of a stripped down 92 Laser AWD track/winter beater.

I recently bought a 91 GSX, only had it a few months, by far the "nicest" DSM I've ever owned. The car is tight, some old man bought it new and put 146k on it. Unfortunately, he tried to rebuild the 14b and it appears to be using every fluid that goes through it.

If you've owned it for twenty years and still loving it you have a big heart my friend. Very few people can buy a car like this and stick to it that long.

Well, there was a time or two that I wasn't loving it at all, as I've had my fair share of problems with my car through the years. But I've been fortunate enough to have always had an extra car available when things went wrong. So I've had the luxury of being able to repair the GSX while still being able to drive to work everyday.

For most of its life my car has remained mostly stock except for the HKS exhaust, ported 2G exhaust maifold, air filter, EGT and boost controller. Recently, after 5 years of storage (driveway), I decided it was time to begin modifying it the way I've always dreamed but never started.

Over the past 8 months I've done the followig maintenance:
Timing belt
Water pump
Accessory belts and pulleys
O2 sensor
Magnecor plug wires

I also put on the following performance parts:
3" turbo back Megan exhaust
Tubular O2 housing
HKS 264/272 cams
3G lifters
4 bolt rear
Big brakes
SS brake lines
FIC 650cc injectors
Keydiver chip with injector compensation
Fluidampr harmonic balancer
MMCd logger

I have but still need to install the following:
LC-1 wideband
S-AFC2
New EGT probe
Fidanza flywheel
Cam gears

And I still need to change:
Carrier bearings
Drive shaft U-joints
Wheel bearings
Oil pump and rear main seal

Hopefully, with proper maintenance, replacement parts availablity and the judicous use of perfomance parts, I can keep it going for quite awhile longer. Today, it's running better and stronger than ever has, albeit a little rich, but the S-AFC2 should take care of that.
