I have a Catback Exhaust on my car, I think it is an HKS Hiper but I heard those are only for the Turbo. Here is a picture of the tip maybe someone out there knows for sure what kind I have or would suggest a good one. I autocross so I would like to pick up some more low end for good quick acceleration. I heard the big cats sacrafice low end for top end.
Here is the picture:

i'm running pacesetter header and cat-back with a hollowed out converter. the quality of the exhaust is kinda low, but it does have mandrel bends at least. i hvae the 2.0L nt and i have most of my power from 2500-about a max of 6000. anything higher than that nad its about useless. i'd look for a good header, test pipe to bolt in for the autocross, and a 2 1/2" catback. that should get you good midrange power.

i have yet to add an exhaust system to my car...but when i do i'll probably be buying an all out Greddy exhaust...header and cat back....and possibly going "cat-less" but ill keep it for strict New Jersey exhaust laws...
and none of those big monster 4" coffee can exhausts...i'm getting the dual chamber muffler with dtm tip...
thats my plan...for the future of my exhaust

I have a Pace Setter Headder (crap) and 2 1/2 in cat back (from local Jersey race shop) with Apexi dunk muffler.
If you want a good headder go with the bro speed. I had to have my Pace Setter welded twice due to cracking.

I heard the the stock GST or GSX exhaust works well up to a point with NT's. Anybody out there done this?
yes, you can get a muffler off a gs-t. The rest of the exhaust is the same (2.25") this will give you better flow, a little extra hp, and you won't sacrifice any low-end. and it prolly won't be all loud and stuff. If you want louder/nicer go with a muffer only since the piping is 2.25 which is bigger than the muffler itself. this will be good for upto about 200hp.
and w/ the money u save you can get a cai or s/thing to help lo-end

HKS makes a cat back specifically for the N/T. It's the HKS Sport W1. I've had it on my GS for about 6 months and am quite happy with it. It is rather pricey though, mine was like $570 installed.

That's a nice looking system, how's the power band do you still have the low end torque. And how loud is it?

There was a little decrease in low-end torque, but it was slight. I'd estimate at max hp I see about a 2-4 hp gain depending on conditions, it's enough to be noticable. Sound is excellent! It gives a real nice throaty sound in the mid-high RPM range, while not much louder than stock in the low RPMs. It definately doesn't sound tin canny like alot of the exhausts do.

The stock rear section for a GST or TSI is sufficiant for most.
If you are staying normally aspirated, 2.5" is the way to go, doesn't zap much low end. The Greddy SP is pretty good still somewhat pricey though.
If you plan on turboing, a 3.0" really helps but still zaps some low end but not enough to really notice.

I think I may try to find a GST or TSi stock exhaust and put my HKS away until I get the turbo. Anybody in SoCal have a GST or TSi stock exhaust they want to get rid of?

How's the low end torque?

Acutually I lost some in the low end, but made up for it in the higher RPM's. Great looks and sound.

Apex has a nice line of exhausts but if for me, I like the N1.... :)

I really need to improve my low end torque. I was wondering if I put a baffler in the tail Pipe if it might just give me a little more backpressure so that I could improve the bottom end. Anybody know if this would work, I've seen these baffler thingy's on the pipes of some pretty fast Autox cars. It's like a cupped plate that fits over the end of the pipe. If anybody knows what I'm talking about and knows where I can get one it would be greatly appreciated. :)

Hey Art,
Do I have to be in the SCCA to race around on California Speedway? I live like 10 mins from it and would love to try it. If you have to be a member, how do you get started? thanks.

They don't actually let us race on the track. We usually use a section of the parking lot. Now later in the year we are having an offical meet there May 6th. This may be on the track but I doubt it, but it is open to anyone to race in. Come on out I'll be there and I'll show you the ropes. You can even race for time only (called X runs) if you want or we could figure out what class you would be in.
You have a lot of fun.

It only costs $25 buck for the competition. You only get three runs but at the end of the comp if there is still light which there will be they have fun runs for a $1 a lap, this often lasts for an hour or more and you can get up to 10 more laps if you hustle. You won't believe how much fun this is! :D

If you want to drive to El Toro Marine Base this weekend we'll be racing on Sat and Sun. Sat is a practice and it is full but I'll be giving rides in my car and my brothers SVO Mustang Race Car. Sunday is open though if you want to drive your car just make sure you are there by 7:30 am.

Sweet, I'll try to make it this weekend. Sounds like fun. Now my uncle is interested, he has a 93 mustang GT. I would just kill to be faster than him on a track.

That's what sweet about Autox, the fastest car often doesn't win the fastest DRIVER does. It's all up to you!
You know what my car looks like I'll be there with my two brothers one has the SVO Race car #41 and the other has a red Jensen Healy. I hope you make it.

I saw your car at the El Toro Race. I parked right behind you. Nobody was there so I didn't get to talk to you. I was only there for about an hour to check it out. It looks so fun. I don't really understand how the classes go though. Like where would I fit in? I'm going to race when it is at Fontana. See ya there.

Based on the mods you have listed you could probably run STS class. Thats what I had to run today because I wore out my race tires in the practice the day before, so I had to run on my streets. Did OK but our NT's work better with a smaller diameter tire in autox events. My streets are 225x50x16 Kuhmo 711's in the autox I usually use 205x55x14's.
I saw your car but I didn't know what you looked like so I couln't find you. I was probably watching the other cars run. I was sitting in a green chair to the left of the annoucers booth. I talked to a few people there maybe you were one of them and I didn't even know. If you send me your email address I will let you know when the signups for fontana start up. You'll want to enter the practice event right away because they fill up very fast and you will get more driving in at a practice.

Maybe I'm missing something, but when I got to HKS web site, I am able to find out which exhaust they offer, but can't actually click on anything to order, or even find out info and prices. Does anyone have a link? Looking at uhh.. HKS Sport W1.

I've actually got the same exact setup on my '99 NT. Hotshot header and Greddy SP exhaust, with an Injen intake. I really like the setup because at cruising speeds it's got a fairly quite, low rumble (you definitely won't be harassed by the cops). But, when you open up the throttle a little more the sound changes to a very throaty growl. It does turn heads when you're at speed. I've actually had a lot of people make comments about they like the way the car sounds. And yeah the car does pull pretty hard from about 3500RPM all the way to redline.
