I'm going to have a custom 2.5" turbo back exhaust built and am going to use a high flow cat converter. Does it matter what the external dimensions (ie, body length, total length, width, height) are of the cat as far as fitting properly, considering I'm having the whole exhaust replaced anyways? I can get a 2.5" CatCo from Summit for ~$60 that is 12" long overall, will this work?

Any cat will work, but from a performance aspect, the largest diameter, shortest length "high-flow" cat should technicaly give you the lowest back pressure. It is really hard to say which is the best, as you would need to buy them all and flow test them all. But if it says its "high-flow", you should be alright.

I'm going to order one of Summit's cats, but I need to know if the stock one has an air tube or not. Anyone know?

No air tube on the cat. Good luck and let us know how the exhaust works out for ya.

Thanks for the help guys. I'll let you all know how this system turns out when I get it together.

I have a Maremount 3-way on my car. 3" all the way through inlets and outlets. I called Maremount directly and they told me that it flowed enough to support direct replacement on up to a 5.7 liter engine. It works very well on my set up with my HRC Eliminator JR. downpipe and Thermal 3" cat back.

I purchase a B.Racing 2.5 cat over the weekend. I drove almost 2hrs only to find out that its a "CATCO" cat! I could kick myself in the ........ I paid $150 for it. I wasnt gonna leave without cause I have to go to E-check the following monday. My point is I paid $150 for a "CATCO" cat while Summit sells them for about half the price. I am not telling you not to buy an expensive "high flow" cat but do a little searching before you do.

BTW I slapped the cat on and drove to the station and passed with flying colors. BUT 150BUCKS.....WOW!

Yeh, I thought that Buscher used the CatCo converter (someone on the DSMtrader kinda stated that it was), but wasn't sure. Well, if it makes you feel any better, there are different grades of converters from CatCo, so you may have gotten a higher flowing one. What is the part # on your cat and is it 2.5"? Oh, I came across a site that stated that the cat I got (I finally purchased one last week from Summit last week; it arrived the next day!) was good for up to a 5.9l engine. I haven't installed it yet, as I'm still waiting for my other exhaust parts to arrive. I'll keep you updated.

does a high flow cat make the exhaust quieter or do people put it on to pass inspection?

The high flow cat is used because it flows better than the stock one due to better internal materials and larger diameter inlets/outlets, it bolts up easier if you are connecting to a larger downpipe and catback, and it allows you the piece of mind that your ride is legal and you'll pass emisions tests and not recieve huge fines if you're pulled over and the cop decides to look under your car to "see what you're running." It'll also be quiter than a test pipe, but will restrict exhaust flow a little more.

He had told me that they had them on a few of their higher powered cars. I think he said some high 11 second cars.

Well I spoke directly with Bill Hahn Jr at Hahnracecraft, which is where I purchased my High Flow Cat from, and he stated that they have found very little to no difference in flow between the Random Tech cat and the Maremount cat that they sell. Or atleast not a big enough difference to justify a $100+ higher investment price for the Random Tech over the other brand.

I understand you are going to make your own exhaust. Congrats, I did the same thing for my Talon. I figure pipe is pipe (LOL) and it was kinda fun getting involved. I thought I'd add some comments to getting some extra performance:

- use only mandral bent tubing (I am sure you know this or one hundred of us other fans already told you! 'nuff said)

- Talk to your tube bender. When you bend the tube, ask for the largest radius. A lot of shops will use one size (its faster, no changing of the mandral tooling), however they will usually go for the smallest size, which is not the best for flow.

- Lets see, you said you have the AWD......if the bender is carefull, some of the bends in the current system can be removed/straightened out, improving flow some more.

Well, thats all I have for now. Have fun!

Kyle :)
