I have always wanted to road or rally race but after playing GranTurismo for awhile Im afraid I'd bump into people. I certainly wouldn't want to mess up my car, let alone someone elses. Anyone have any comments on starting out racing?

You don't get to do wheel to wheel racing without full safety equipment, a license, and such.

When you "road race", you have to flash to pass, and someone has to wave you by. You can catch up and pass people, but there's no fender to fender, three wide going through a corner a la' BTCC.

I suggest starting with an auto-x.

What do you need to do auto cross? I'm sure a helmet is necessary, but is there anything else?
