My wife and I went out to Indianapolis this weekend to check out the Formula One grand prix ... un-f&*king-believable ... what a blast. You have no idea just quick those cars are, how fast they accelerate, just HARD they break, and most impressive, how LOUD they sound (@ 17500rpm). I could swear that all the drivers were braking after the 50 yard came up. They looked like they braked while they took the first corner off the main straight-away. I also found that the qualifying session was much much more fun than the actual race itself. BUT, for my wife and I, it was a dream come through ... we've followed this sport for years and years now, so it was something to actually watch it live.
I also checked out the differences between a formula one car and a Indy Cart car:
1. Indy cars top out at 240mph, F1 at 204mph (specific to Indy).
2. F1 out brake and out accelerate Indy cars (don't have the actual numbers).
3. Indy cars are wider and longer than F1 cars in dimensions.
4. Indy cars run on methanol and F1 cars on unleaded race fuel.
5. Indy cars make 600Hp (or thereabouts) and F1 850Hp.
6. Indy cars run slicks and F1 run grooved tyres.
7. Indy cars run a 7 speed tranny, and F1 6 or 7 depending on track.
8. Indy cars rev to 10500rpm and F1 to 17500rpm.
Thats about all I can remember.

Sounds awesome. How'd you get tix? "Normal channels" or connections? Its a hard ticket to get.

Great race. I got my tickets through a friend of my neighbor who's a regular at the Indy 500. He said that the Indy 500 regulars were given first shot at the tickets.
That chicane in the race was incredible. Three hairpin turns back to back -- looked like an autox course!
I'm just now recovering from the 28hour round trip drive...

I had in-field tickets. On Saturday some guy scalped me penthouse paddock tickets for $170 for two. Normal price for them was $140 each. I think the in-field seating would have been much better. There'a always next year.

I watched the race from start the finish on Fox Sportsnet. I have to admit it is the most exciting F1 event I've seen yet. Second to that is the regular Monte Carlo events and the historic, yet tragic, crash in Belgium last year.
A couple weeks before the Indy F1 race, I bought the EA Sports F1 2000 game for my PC. With the game steering wheel, I played it over and over, and drove the Indianapolis circuit most of the time. Strangely enough, I knew the course all too well before I even watched the F1 race on TV. :) And yes, the infield drives like an autox.
If the game is as realistic as the real thing, then I have to say that F1 cars extremely hard to drive the way Schumaker and Hakkinen drive them. Very tail happy and gobs of low end torque. One slip and there's very little you can do to recover.

I had the old F1 racing game, think it was called F1 Legends, and it had the old South African Kayalami track on it ... I loved it to bits, even though the cars were old.

The IRL indy cars rev to about 10,500 RPM. The CART indy cars actually rev over 14,000 RPM. They use a twin turbo 2L (that's right 2.0L) V8 that make their horsepower peak at about 14,000 RPM. No one, outside of the crew and the makers of the engine, knows what the redline on those things is. Supposed to be some big secret. The sad part is that these engines are made by Honda. They should get Mitsubishi to make them some racing engines :) (The IRL engines are made by Oldsmobile I believe).

As a HARDCORE DSMer I can say this.
Mitsu would get walked on in CART.
Honda knows their **** in the real racing world. And street cars too. C'mon. Think about it 195 HP in a NA 1.8. Mitsu made a real gem with the 4G63 but they aint got nothin on the tecnological design of a real VTEC. not that single cam junk (sorry BG). Any major engine builder that honda motors come insanely eficient from the factory. I'm talking about near perfectly tuned combustion chambers, ports, etc.
But anyway I'm a DSM guy so....Honduhs suck :)

Not to mention a NA GS DSM is really a dodge neon motor. I wonder what mitsu's 2.0L NA can do and what cars they are in?
