i juts bought 17 inch rims for my 1st gen that are 7 inch wide in width...i'm wondering what the largest diameter tire i can fit on the rim....most people seem to use a 225 tire..can i use a 235 tire???or is it too much for a 7 inch wide rim?

I have 235 for 7 years on 7 inch rims. no problem. you just have to watch out for the offset. I say 235 is the max on 7 inch thought I could play with 245... haha.
go to jegs.com you can buy a rim/tire guage (idon't think thats the official namefor it). It will tell you what size tire, rim, and offset. everything you will need to set up with custom rims and tires. I believe its $60.
235 is the max to run on a 7.5" rim, stick with 225's.
