Exclamation Transmission shopping/rebuilding

Say you have 1500 and you want to buy, build, and set up the most bulletproof auto transmission you can. What do you, yourself, do? What parts and brands do you buy?

Keep this thread on task. It will probably answer many questions for many users. Thank you

If you know how to build a automatic transmission then you might consider that route, but if your like me and lack the knowledge can't go wrong with sheppards transmission. I have personally never had a transmission rebuilt by them. (Cant keep a DSM on the road.)
But many members swear by them.

Thank you, ill keep that option available. Do you know if their stage 1 and stage 2 rebuilds include fixing whats wrong with the original transmission? Because right now my current transmission refuses to move.

Thumbs up Re: Transmission shopping/rebuilding

As to my above comment, there stage rebuilds are just parts lists and not an actual pricing. But still a trusted company among users.

Re: Transmission shopping/rebuilding

If you don't know what is causing the problem then nobody can tell you if a rebuild will fix it. It could be the trans computer, shift solenoids, wiring, pulse generators, TC issue, etc. None of which is generally replaced during a rebuild.

http://sheptrans.com/products/dsm-awd/, here are there standard pricing, also you customize the rebuild, examles inluding taller fifth gear and more, you simly have to browse. Also sense you dont know whats wrong with your transmission you can just buy a rebuilt transmission and give them yours as a core.

But Sean is right you have to figure out whats wrong before you purchase a rebuild that may not even fix the problem.

Re: Transmission shopping/rebuilding

Shep only rebuilds 5 speeds, unless that has recently changed.

http://sinisterspeed.net/mitsubishi/transmissiontcu
For the rebuild kit, shift kit and torque converter.

http://www.importperformancetrans.com/
Also has rebuild kits and converters.

As far as a welded center diff for the automatics, PM me and I can help with that.

BBender over at www.ATDSM.com has all the factory manuals for you to use a s a guide.

http://www.kigglyracing.com/parts/flexplate.htm
This is a must for 6 bolts. He is working on a 7 bolt flexplate as well.

Then head over to http://www.forcedfour.com/ and buy a REAL shift box.

So for around $1500 you can have a SOLID transmission capable of holding single digit power if you rebuild it yourself.

Almost forgot the most important thing. The biggest oil cooler you can fit on your car. Add another 150 or so.

Then add another 120-150 for redline racing ATF or SpAmsoil.

Ignore everything I said, I forgot you had a automatic transmission, I was thinking in terms of standards.

THanks Ted for catching me, got a little ahead of myself.

Just FYI, the 7 bolt flexplate is available, at least on the extremepsi website.
