awd auto trans slips in OD

I have a 1995 talon awd auto trans that was shifting fine. then today it started sipping in OD. I pushed the od button to turn off od and it shifted into third. when starting from a stop it shifted fine into 1st, 2nd then 3rd. push the od button and it slips. any help would be greatly appreciated. oh also when the shifter is in drive you can push into neutral without pushing the top shifter button??? I'm assuming this is not normal. help please....

Re: awd auto trans slips in OD

End clutches. You should be able to move it to neutral.

Re: awd auto trans slips in OD

thanks for the reply. I have done some searching in this forum and keep seeing this as the diagnosis. I would too think this but I had this happen also when I came to a stop and it didnt downshift to 1st. I had to manually shift to first. then it shifted normally to 2nd then 3rd. I turned the od off at this point. would slipping in od keep it from downshifting at a stop? Another question I have will I be able to access the end clutch pack through the passanger wheel well even if it is an AWD? and last quewstion... I saw the video on rebuilding the end clutch and it shows a press to install the retaining clip. how much pressure will it take to load the plate so I will be able to install the retainer? thanks again for your help.....

Re: awd auto trans slips in OD

After more road testing I have better info on symptoms. When OD off it shifts fine from 1st, 2nd, and then third. with OD on it shifts good from 1st to second, then barely gets into third for 2 seconds then slips???? I want to believe it's end clutch pack issues, but does anyone think maybe TCU? I don't want to do unecessary work or spend money and still have issues. please help!!!!!

Re: awd auto trans slips in OD

It sure sounds like the end clutches to me, also its not a good idea to shift into and out of O/D while heading down the road, its best to do it when you are stopped, this will reduce breakage and wear on hard parts.

Re: awd auto trans slips in OD

Started to pull the end clutches and found dark red almost brown fluid. It smells slightly burnt. I don't think this is the issue though. Should I have a shop flush it out before I do the end clutches? I guess I could pull them anyway and check them out. Tomorrow after work.......

Re: awd auto trans slips in OD

Flush it after doing your endclutch if your going to have it done, but if I were you I would bring your own transmission fluid, shops that do flushes tend to only stock one fluid and try to get away with using that one fluid in all cars, and while yes it will technically make your car move, it will shorten the life of the transmission and compromise shift quality all the while. Atf+4 for the win.

Re: awd auto trans slips in OD

I would also watch them do the flush, alot of shops just charge you and never do the service.

Re: awd auto trans slips in OD

First things first...I have to give a big shout out to burkgonzo for the first diagnostic and BISHILVR for all the insight....I took out the end clutch pack today and found the small seal had mulitple tears in it. Also many of the clutch shims were either worn or had no material coating anymore...LOL I will change out the clutches and all the metal shims also. I assume they are all part of the end clutch kit from IPT. I need to know for sure which tranny I have. Not sure if it is the original one. Where is the ID tag located? I think I will do the flush myself. I did some research and found a DIY for trans flush. Last question, I keep seeing issues with aftermarket filters. Can you reccomend a filter that won't cost like an OEM from Mitsubishi? As for all of the other DSMers thanks for all your help. I hope I can pay it forward........
