Just springs or struts & springs?

Sorry for making a thread for this but I need a quick answer.

Just bought a 99 eclipse gs few months back and I've decided I wanted to lower it.
Done a lil research and coilovers are way out of reach cuz I'm a student on a tight budget

It's down to two options and I need opinions.

A. I buy a set of S.Tech Tein springs and throw em on with stock shocks

or

B. Buy used KYB AGX fully adjustable struts and Eibach Pro Kit springs
- http://i815.photobucket.com/albums/z...2356663455.jpg

Both are about the same price, the struts/springs from a partout is a lil more.
I don't want my shocks blowing out if I get just the springs but I'm not sure if it's advised to buy the other option.

Any opinion will help. Thanks

Re: Just springs or struts & springs?

1, Buying lower springs on old shocks/struts that is on a high mileage car is questionable. you don't know when will they blow out.
2, I would buy new shocks/struts on lower springs. just to have that piece of mind so you don't have to go back in their and redo everything.

Re: Just springs or struts & springs?

My car currently has 71,500 miles on it. Would my shocks be able to hold if I just get the springs?

Re: Just springs or struts & springs?

Most vehicles by 70k miles the factory struts are worn out as it is. Can you put lowering springs on them? Sure. Is it a good idea? No.

First issue is that struts that hold have ridden in a certain area in the shock body their entire life, anything out of the normal range of motion is going to be very hard on the seals as they have never run in that area of the shock body before. Additionally most struts are simply too long such that the strut will bottom out internally and bend the piston rod, damage the valve, ect.

Re: Just springs or struts & springs?

Yeah, stock struts will definitely not live long with lowering springs. And for the price of new AGX shocks, you could get Tokico Blue shocks, which are designed for lowering and stiffer springs.

Best option for a simple, yet lower shock/spring replacement:

Re: Just springs or struts & springs?

Alright that looks like a great option. Hopefully I can gather some cash together for those.

Re: Just springs or struts & springs?

you mind as well get coilovers. it may cost a bit more at first, but the potential to adjust the suspension as you like is a good thing
