Clutch pedal wont return in cold weather?

So we are getting into the -20c range here where I live and I know I will be seeing upto -35 maybe -40 before winter is done. My concern is even after I allow the car to heat up for 10 15 minutes the clutch pedal does not return after being depressed and it depresses way too easy. It still works perfectly fine its just irritating that I only have to press the clutch an inch or so for it to engage. I have searched the internet about this and it seems like lots of people experience the same thing in very cold weather, I am just wondering if there is a way to fix this? Oh and I can drive around as much as I want, it never seems to heat up.

Re: Clutch pedal wont return in cold weather?

Ive also experienced sluggish pedal travel when its real cold. Its just the fluid being cold and theres really no way to warm it up.Not much you can do about it except bend over and live with it.Unless the pedal doesnt return at all, in that case id say double check clutch system(air in line, proper fluid blah blah)

Damn, its gonna be a long winter. Hmm, so no mods to make the clutch return harder or adjustments at all?

Re: Clutch pedal wont return in cold weather?

I had the same problem with my 95, what ended up happening is the cold weather made the boot on the master cylinder very brittle and it ended up cracking through the first month or so of extreme cold weather which let air into the system and brake fluid into the cabin of the car. I'd say check that first, 2g's are very common to have clutch master cylinder problems. If you do end up needing a replacement, do NOT buy an autozone/advance auto one, they don't use the correct parts to "refurbish," them and they break in a few thousand miles. NAPA however carries the very good replacement which exedy acually sells with their clutch kits. Good luck!

Re: Clutch pedal wont return in cold weather?

UPDATE - Checked the clutch fluid resevoir, bone dry. Filled it up and bled the system. The fluid I bled out was very dirty but its all clean and topped up now. The mechanic I was with couldn't see any visible leaks so I will have to wait for the vehicle to get really cold again and see what happens. Hopefully this solved the problem.

It's -18C outside, clutch won't return. Guess it's time to look into a master cylinder.

Re: Clutch pedal wont return in cold weather?

UPDATE - So I have ordered the Master and Slave from NAPA, why not considering both together were only $80. The brand they carry is ALTROM so I hope they last.

Re: Clutch pedal wont return in cold weather?

I just saw this and I guess I'm a little late since you already ordered.
What I was going to say is this might be a good time to upgrade to the 3g Master if you ever plan to go to bigger brakes. Here's some discussion on it. http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/hand...1g-too-13.html

Re: Clutch pedal wont return in cold weather?

Thanks for the link, already changed both cylinders though. Are these cars usually a pain in the ass to bleed? I got it so it works 95% percent of the time but it still grinds intermittently and I have to pump it back up. I am guessing there is still a little air in there, will it eventually work itself out?

Re: Clutch pedal wont return in cold weather?

I've experienced the same problem. Bench bleed the slave cylinder and you will be good to go.
