Faceplate hits shifter

Hi guys . I need help figuring out how to shorten the length of my shifter because i bought a new headunit . The problem is that to insert a cd the faceplate folds down and out . Its a double din pioneer avh-p8400bh. When the faceplate folds down it hits the shifter . Iwas thinking of taking off the factory shift knob and fabing up a manual knob that you just have to push down on to change gears. It can only be about 3in tall from the top of the console where the shifter comes through at. please if you have any ideas let me know.

Re: Faceplate hits shifter

Take off the shift knob and try to push the boot down and out of the way, or pull it off. Mark the shifter where u want it to be with a marker. Take off the center console, and remove the shifter. Don't lose any of the bushings or springs otherwise it wont feel good at all when you put it all back together. When you have the shifter off, Just use a hacksaw or bandsaw to cut the shifter where u marked it. Now as for a shift knob, you will have to buy a aftermarket one from AZ or advanced that uses set screws to hold it on, as you wont have threads anymore. Just wrap the end of the shifter where the knob will go with electrical tape to give the set screws something to "bite". Also i'd buy the shift knob first, and make sure that it will have a big enough hole to go over where you cut the shifter, because the shaft of the shifter gets wider the farther you go down. This is the cheap way of doing it, or you can buy a short shifter online, but it still may not be short enough. Hope this helps!

Re: Faceplate hits shifter

Buy a short throw shifter, if you cut the threads off those stupid set screw types will inevitably piss you off as the knob falls off, spins, or you punch your head unit on a shift.

Short Throw not short stick.

Re: Faceplate hits shifter

You guys are misunderstanding what the op is trying to say. He has an auto and is wanting to remove the stock selector and put a manual shift knob in its place. This will work my brother currently has his car set up like that. Although he did it purely for looks not accommodate a flip down stereo. I've didn't however cut the shifter down at all. I don't see why you wouldn't be able to cut it as long as you leave the same amount of rod exposed from the shaft when you cut it.

Re: Faceplate hits shifter

No I don't have any pictures or links but it is very simple. Just pull the stock gear selector off. Once it's off you will have a hollow shaft with a thin rod going up the middle of it. The thin rid in the middle is what needs to be pushed down in order to select a gear. Use a dremmel and cutoff wheel to cut the outside shaft to your desired length then cut the exact same about of material off of the rod. On my brothers car he also added a shift boot to make it look like it was a 5spd. For the overdrive button he zip tied it to the shaft so he could still use it yet it remained hidden since it was covered by the shift boot. Keep in mind there is no good way to keep the manual shift knob attatched. It will basically just be resting on top of the gear selector and not be screwed to anything. At one point he used one of the cheap autozone set screw type shift knobs and pushed it all the way down and then tightened it that way he no longer had to push down to change gears. The knob then was tight and stayed in place but he did away with that after accidentally bumping it from D to R while going down the road.

Re: Faceplate hits shifter

Ok i get what you are saying . I actually went to the junkyard and picked up an extra shifter for 10 bucks to try this on before I ruind mine. What if put threads on the small rod and drilled and threaded the inside of the shift knob? With a little blue locktight this shoul do the trick ?

Re: Faceplate hits shifter

I would be scared of screwing anything onto that thin rod. You could possibly break it or twist it all up and then be stuck replacing it. One option that I recommended to my bro was to somehow attach the shift knob to the shift boot (if you decide to use one) in order to keep it in place better. He never bothered with that since the knob sits fairly well on the hollow shaft. it's enough to keep it from wobbling around a lot but it just does nothing to hold it down.

Re: Faceplate hits shifter

Or, a manual tranny swap, then only load CDs in 2nd 4th or Reverse

Seriously though, buying a different head unit might be the best option.

That's exactly why I planned ahead when I bought a double din radio for my ride (also an automatic). I went with a non-motorized unit (fixed faceplate). The only loss in screen size was having one that's 6.2" instead of 7", and I never have to worry about a frakkin' motor & mechanism crapping-out (like my previous single din monitor unit did).

Fewer moving parts means less to go wrong!

(AM/FM/DVD/GPS/Bluetooth/iPod/USB/SDcard, etc, for $199.95)
