Great information you guys have here! This will help the members solve their automatic transmission problems very easily.
BTW, is your TCU is pulsing too quickly and you can't distinguish the codes, it is the TCU that has a problem.
This is quit similar to pulling the CEL codes... I have used the multimeter to do this for that reason but, when trying to do the same for the TCU nothing happend. I think the TCU may be bad... My trans sounds like it wants to go in gear but nothing ever happens.
Guess I'm on the hunt for a TCU... I have 93 FWD Auto N/A if someone can help with this. since I've been a member for several years but, still can post where I need to!
Any light bulb that works off a 12V will work as well. Connect the two wires accordingly and watch the pulse of the light. This applies for a buzzer as well.
Sorry for the bump.
Would a test light work? The reason I ask is I connected it both ways, and got nothing. If nothing reads does that mean the tcu is shot?
My port looks like the lines below, It is attached to the side of the fuse box like in the picture. I am assumeing it is the two pins on the left?

I just pulled my TCU codes and let me just say that it is rather hard to count the short pulses with a digital multimeter! It almost doesn't respond fast enough. Maybe I just have a cheap one? Idk...
Anyway, I pulled the following codes from my 98 GS-T Spyder.
Either 84, 85, or 86 (can't tell)
Either 52, 54, or 54 (can't tell)
and 21 - Open Circuited Kickdown Servo.
Can anyone help me with these??
I'm going to try using a better quality Craftsman multimeter I just found to see if it reacts any more quickly. i will also try reseting the TCU and see if that does anything at all.
This might be a stupid question. But can you check the TCU codes with an OBD II scanner? And is it the same port as the ECU. Right under the dash? I saw a picture earlier in the post and just wanted to confirm. My car just went into limp mode and then the check engine light came on.
Yes its the same port as the ecu on the 2g . No you cant use a generic obd2 scanner to read the codes, it would have to be a dealership scanner that does airbags, body control, cruise control, and automatic transmission communications.

o.k. guys...I too have a 2G car with tranny issues. I tried to get codes from my plug (16 pin) and no response at all. The picture from arron_34_powers and the white plug in the picture only has 6 pins????? this seems to be the wrong plug. All resources tell me that the plug near the center console (16pin) is the correct one. I don't get any response to my meter?? please help. thanks....
