Re: 98 eclipse gst engine in 96 gst wont start

I merged your threads, this is 100% relevant to your previous thread so there is zero reason to make a new thread. Background information is important with issues like this.

Also you need to set the engine to #1 TDC before you install the CAS with the 2 marks lined up and if you are not using the early 2g cas you may have to swap wiring with injectors and/or coils as the signal is inverted.

Re: 98 eclipse gst engine in 96 gst wont start

The 1g cas may be 180* out, try flipping it 180* and then swapping the plug wires, swap 2&3 with 1&4 and see what it does. Also remember that the 1g cas is adjustable so you might just have the cas turned too far in one direction (its slotted on the body) maybe try moving its position one way then the other while its running to see if it picks up. You will want to use a timing light when your all done to set the timing to 5*. I would try moving the cas first and then if its not right, try flipping the cas paddle 180* and reinstall as I said earlier.

Re: 98 eclipse gst engine in 96 gst wont start

OK bishilvr and everyone else who has helped thank you very much. I got the car started my 1g CAS was on the wrong way. Now I have another issue. Once I got the car started, the idle is really rough. It sounds like it wants to turn off and after a while of bad idle it shuts off. It will start right up, but the idle is still bad. I can't drive it because if I accelerate the car once I let go of the gas it will shut off.

Have you tried setting the ignition timing with a timing light?

Rough idle usually indicate vacuum leak, but if timing is off like Bilshilvr say then that might be the issue

Re: 98 eclipse gst engine in 96 gst wont start

No I haven't tried timing it with a timing light. On the timing mark by the crank pulley it has a "T", a line, a "10", and another line (going from driver to the radiator. Where does timing need to be? What should I set it at?

Re: 98 eclipse gst engine in 96 gst wont start

Normally you would lock the ecu into a special mode that the ecu will hold timing at 5 degrees and then you would use the timing light to line up the crank pulley mark to the 5* mark on the timing cover. That is however not possible in all 2g turbo cars save for some rare 95's as the timing is normally not adjustable with a 2g so the connector to lock the ecu does not exist.

Unless you have dsmlink or similar the best you can do is acquire a scantool or datalogger to see what the ecu thinks the timing is with the car running and then adjust the CAS till the timing light shows the same as the datalogger..
