My wife was driving our GSX today and it sputtered and died on her while driving. She pulled over and couldn't get it to start again so I drove out to take a look. I couldn't get it working either but the fuel pump was making a strange noise almost like a whine then pop when it was trying to prime.
I took the cover off of the fuel pump and checked the wiring because I didn't know if it had been rewired or not (I just bought the car a couple months ago) and I don't think it has been. I turned the key back on and it sounded like it primed several times after I took off the cover, when I cranked it over it started fine and drove home without issue.
It had been over an hour since it had died so I am very confused. A similiar thing happened to me the other day when driving but after about 2 - 3 minutes it started back up again. Could it be a lose connector somewhere or something overheating? I've never had a fuel pump go bad on me so I don't know the symptoms but I can imagine not pumping is one of them
I also noticed when I got home that my AFPR gauge was reading 29 with the vacuum hose on and 38-39 with the hose off. My friend and I just set it to 42 with the hose off a month or so ago I am almost postive.
Mods: Walbro 255, AFPR, EvoIII 16g, FMIC, etc. Stock injectors and ECU.
I should also note that I didnt have a check engine light or anything either.
Your fuel pump doesn't prime with the key on, only when you crank the car.
Could be a fuel pump, could also be your fuel filter if it was never changed.
Do you have a check engine light?
When it won't start, have you checked for spark?
How many miles on your walbro 255? If you never did a fuel filter, now is a good time to change it, however be very very careful not to snap the fuel line at the bottom, it's been known to happen many times.
Well when I turned the key on and sat for a few there was a sound like the fuel pump and then a pop. After I pulled the cover off it was definitely the fuel pump making noise and it cycled about 5 times before I tried to crank it over. I always thought the fuel pump primed with key on.
No check engine light. I haven't checked for spark because my first thought was fuel. If it was spark wouldn't it be consistent?
Idk how many miles are on it as it was in there when I bought it but I would guess less than 25k. I haven't changed the fuel filter yet but I bought one so I will do that this weekend.
From what I've seen, fuel pressure isn't held very long. I'm not very familiar with AFPRs, but a seal or something can go bad if I'm remembering correctly. Some internal piece goes bad, maybe a diaphram. Its been awhile since I've seen the thread discussing a bad FPR. I wish I could offer better help, but thats about all I've got.
So when I turn off the car should there still be pressure for a bit or will it drop to zero? I'm not sure that the AFPR is the culprit but I only say that because of the odd noise the fuel pump was making and the fact that the issue is so intermittent. If the AFPR seal went bad it seems like it would be an all or nothing kind of thing but I could be wrong.
One thing occured to me today though, I have a big exhaust leak under the middle of the car. I am not sure where the fuel lines run but if they got warm could that cause it to die? Just something I am thinking out loud about.
Could this happen if the fuel pump relay went bad? If that were the case though I think it would just fail or click back and forth continually.
You should keep decent fuel pressure for awhile, over 24 of 48 hours if I'm not mistaken, maybe even longer. If you lose pressure overnight, your FPR is bad or there is an issue somewhere in the lines or something. I know that for sure.
Oh hmm...I will have to double check but I am pretty sure that my AFPR reads zero after turning off the car. A friend mentioned he has heard about an O ring in the 255's that if not installed correctly will cause it to lose pressure and die.
Hopefully I will have time to dig into it on Saturday, I have the swine flu right now so can't really go out and mess with it.
So I went out tonight and pulled the number 3 plug and it looked fine, gap was good etc. I put it back in, checked the wires and cleared the code. When I started the car and let it warm up it didnt come back.
When I started it thought it ran rough for a second and then idled great. At startup the fuel pressure on my AFPR gauge read 40 psi with the vacuum line on. After it warmed up it dropped to about 35 psi. When I reved the car it dropped a little to around 32-33 psi and then the idle would dip low like it was going to die, but it didn't.
When I turned it off the pressure drops to zero over about 2 seconds. 93_GSX, I'm a little confused, you said in one post that pressure will drop right away and then the next that I should have pressure for 24-48 hours. Can you or someone else clarify?
