So there is a guy on Craigslist that I have talked to that is selling a 2g oem CF hood for $330. Now that is a really good deal. But the whole thing that makes me nervous is that the hood is from ebay, and I would be worried about fading. But would clear coat prevent that. Or should I just wait and get a VIS hood?
Clear coat will not prevent that, its not the clear that fades but the resin that they use. Cheap carbon fiber uses fiberglass resin ( I believe ) where as the good stuff uses, well, the good stuff.
Buy VIS and be happy or save a couple hundred and kick yourself in the ass.

I would go look at it in person and see how it looks. If you like it and it looks like its been done right then pick it up, if not save up for the VIS
Problem is, looking at it wont tell you shit, especially if its new and not seen sunlight. The sunlight is partially what causes the fade. Buying from a reputable dealer is about the only real action one can take to get a quality product.

I agree heavily. I once had an civic,... i know i know.. anywho i bought an cheap ebay carbon hood for 280 shipped and looked great the day i installed it. Put it this way, by the end of the first season/summer, i ended up painting it the color of the car.
I had an friend that bought an quality hood from andysautosport an year before me and his hood still looks good. Granite he does wash and buff and maintain his car better than most but his hood 2.5 years later is still looking fine.
Those hoods are fiberglass with carbon fiber overlay. They dont even use epoxy resin. Thats why they get hazey. They use polyester resin which is worthless and heavy anyways. You can buff it out but the hood will dissolve in sunlight after a few years around the thinner edges anyways so you might as well paint it as soon as you get it. Is it lighter? Yes. Its not a complete waste, but it will not stand up to time by itself and it is not as light as a quality part.

Well there are compromises and now that you know about them you can make the call. I, for one, would rather cut out all the metal support under the hood. I dont see a reason for it to be there and its free. It pretty much cuts the weight of the hood by a 1/3 or more.
You can also gut the hatch and put lexan back there. Thats a good 30 lbs right there atleast.

Maybe an little harsh. I always believe in the" its my car and ill do what i want" I can see owning an nice clean stockish red eclipse and wanting an nice set of wheels, carbon hood, and some extras to make an nice daily driver with some looks just because thats the way some and i am.
I personally would say 300 some dollars for an hood that you dont know the brand exc is not going to be your best bet. Granite, if he did buy it off ebay, there are some sellers that do sell vis, seibon, exc, hoods that are okay in overall quality. I would ask the guy if he looked under the hood for an brand name tag or something first . If its an no namer for over 300 id pass but thats me. Prices of vis hoods or other brand name hoods are not that horrible anymore and if you look, you can find decent prices now.
Ok ass whipe, lets think of it. Any person thinking that putting on a Carbon Fiber hood on a car to make it faster is stupid. The difference is like 30 pounds. I drive a 2g nt, what is 30 pounds going to do, not a whole lot. I am in High School and I just want to have a clean car, and I think a Carbon Fiber hood would help.

I have looked at VIS hoods, they come out to be around $500 with shipping. I was thinking this would be a good and quick way to save some money.
