Replacement for 5.25" door speakers on a 1G?

For those who have replaced their door speakers on a 1G with stock 5.25 inch speakers, what brand and model 5.25 inch speaker did you use? And what, if any modifications did you have to make?

I scrapped the 5.25 in favor of oversized 6.5s. Only modification was to remove the factory grill/guard, enlarge the opening a little and create new screw holes. No clearance issues since they top mount. Just use the grills that come with the new speakers.

I'm assuming that you didn't reuse the plastic basket because there's no way a 6.5" speaker can fit in it?

And I'm guessing you mean drilling new holes in the door sheet metal? Did you just mount the speakers directly onto the door sheet metal or did you use a speaker bracket?

And for the factory grilles on the door panel. Did you mean you had to cut them out or are they removable?

Re: Replacement for 5.25" door speakers on a 1G?

Ok, I think I know what's going on. From what I gather after asking around, the door cutouts on the door sheet metal itself are different sizes depending on what speaker size was installed from the factory. Also, there are 2 different size speaker baskets/ brackets from the factory depending on which speaker was installed. So if your car came with 5-1/4" speakers and you want to install 6.5" ones, you'll have to cut out the hole in the door sheet metal bigger and get the larger bracket/ basket, fabricate your own or see if there's an aftermarket one.

I wonder why DSM didn't just make them all one size with the bigger hole and use a bracket that fills in the extra space for the smaller 5-1/4" speaker. Perhaps the sound quality would suffer? If so, that's attention to detail.

Re: Replacement for 5.25" door speakers on a 1G?

I didn't have to cut any metal. Holes I drilled were in the particle board of the door panel, then used the included metal screw clips. No need for any baskets. I've had it this way for over 10 years. No problem. I did rewire the entire system from speaker wires, etc. Only factory wires I used for the whole system was the constant 12v for the HU, accessory power wire, and ground.

Yes I didn't use the basket because it doesn't fit. I put 6 3/4 (oversized 6.5) components in the front. Mounted the tweeters on the side view mirror triangular plastic pieces.
