What is this? Auto Comp Controller

I was installing my sound system in my 95 awd auto..up under the dash board..passenger area..and i stumbled upon a small mitsu black box labeled AUTO COMP CONTROLLER w/ a HI/LOW dial on it....

The only thing I can think of is since the 2g doesnt have a power/econ switch for the tranny this is its replacement?

I havent messed w/ it yet...untill i get further ok from you guys :-)
