AWD/FWD fuel tank differences

I'm in the process of putting in the AWD fuel tank and subframe. I have a 98 TSi, while the donor parts are from a 99 GSX.

In the pictures below, the clean tank is the AWD one. It barely has any of the hoses and crap that the FWD has! There are 2 sensors that I have no idea what to do with. One is in the middle of the FWD tank and the other is on the back of the same tank where all of the hoses and valves are. The final pic is where the second sensor is.

Do I need these sensors and what is the deal with all the extra junk on the FWD tank?!

Re: AWD/FWD fuel tank differences

The AWD tank has the fuel pump and gauge unit on the passenger's side of the tank (as it sits in the car) and a second fuel gauge assembly under the other white cap. The FWD gas tank has the fuel pump and fuel gauge as two seperate assemblies 1 under each cap.

Re: AWD/FWD fuel tank differences

I know about the dual sending units on the AWD tank. I guess that is what the middle one is (duh on my part).

I am still perplexed as to how complex the hoses are on the FWD one.. and if the sensor in the back is crucial.

Re: AWD/FWD fuel tank differences

Omega WS6 - Hey buddy. Any updates on this? I'll be pulling the FWD gas tank tonight, so I'll be at the point where you were last November. I'm just curious what you figured out about all those hoses and that rear sensor.

Also, how did you mount the AWD tank? Did you cut the mounts from the AWD donor car?

The automotie articles write-up is not loading right now, so I don't have much to refer to for my next step.....

Re: AWD/FWD fuel tank differences

Yeah, I finally have the car back together.

I ended with some serious issues with the fuel gauge. There is a thread on the "other site" about it. Long story short, do your self a favor and check to make sure the aux sender works.

It seems that all the extra crap is fluff for the tank. I ended up keeping the sensor (didn't plug it in though) just in case. The harness is there just hangin' out.

As far as mounting it, I found the existing holes (I held up the shield). I then drilled a big hole near the one I wanted to use and dropped a bolt down.

Can you please link me to it?

Well, it's good you know that I wont need to reuse any of that hose mess. I'm curious to know what purpose it all served on the FWD's though. It looks too complex to waive off as "fluff".

Re: AWD/FWD fuel tank differences

Also, how the heck do you drain the FWD tank?
For my AWD tank, I simply tipped it and drained the fuel from the filler hose, but that same process won't work on the FWD tank. Any tips?

Re: AWD/FWD fuel tank differences

I simply hooked the fuel pump up to a 12V source using the FWD harness I cut out, and let it do the work. I had some hose that fit over the outlet pipe and pumped it into fuel jugs. With no back pressure it flows similar to a garden hose. When the pump ran dry I put the tank out and let the rest evaporate.

Re: AWD/FWD fuel tank differences

I lost yesterday's reply

Here is the link: http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/showthread.php?t=247093

I can only guess on the difference. I know that the donor parts are from a 99. I have no idea if my car has CA emissions...which has changed things in the past. I do know that I can't find the charcoal canister in the front, so I can only assume that mess of hoses is a tank mounted equivilant.

Re: AWD/FWD fuel tank differences

I had the same issue with my AWD conversion. I did the same thing and eliminated all of the extra hoses from the FWD tank. Everything works great except when I go to fill the tank at the gas station the gas come shooting out of the top of my filler neck all over the ground. It is like too much pressure is building in the tank and the gas has no place to go but out. This after only filling it with 1/2 gallon. I can fill the tank if I do very slow, and I mean very slow. It would take me 15 min to fill the tank. There are three small vacuum ports at the top of my filler neck. Only one of them opens with the switch that is depressed when inserting a gas nozzle. This is the one I hooked up, but it seams too small to release enough pressure. I capped off the other two. How did you guys remedy this problem?

Have you checked to see if the filler hose itself is pinched? Are you using the GST or GSX filler neck?
