So... being DSM guys I'm sure this isn't a question that will fall on deaf ears.
I got one for ya'll.
Salvage title rebuilding and you.
Who's done it?
What's it take?
I found something cheap and driveable that would nicely suffice as a d/d in the mean time as I car hunt for a good toy.
Normally... I get my buddy to find one at an auction, strip it to its frame... squish it and turn in the bad titled car's title instead. While I use the good one for the car I'd want to drive.
Quick VIN swap... and voila! Problem solved.
I no longer have that option.
As long as you don't sell it, and when it breaks it gets crushed.
Noone gets hurt. Which was the common practice for cheap d/d's
Not an option anymore. So... what do you have to do to actually re-title the car as something driveable. I mean, the car is B+ material. Not wrecked or fucked up at all just has a salvage title, floated thru an auction or 2, from being abandoned, and I was thinking of picking it up.
What kind of horse shit am I looking at?
Do the rules vary from different states?
Even if I have to flip it to another state... all sly dog... what's it take to do?
ASAP so I know whether to grab it or not.

I know a guy who crashed his GTI. He rebuilt it himself and was having trouble getting the title because they require proof that the rebuild was done professionally. Just my semi-personal experience.
if im not mistaken all you have to do is rebuild it and have a DOT safety verification thing done on it (hell at least thats all it was in missouri about 5 years ago)
Asmo, flip through there. Pay close attention to the Black one. I paid $100 for it from a j/y, drove it home on transport plates and fixed it for less than $200. It was a salvage title, and here in NC, when it passed normal state inspection, the registration was changed to "Total Loss Claim". I can keep it, resell it or crush it.
PA may be different, but then NC isn't that far away, and I own 2 houses down here if you need an NC addy. LOL
In cali you can still register and insure salvage title vehicles, it just means that your insurance wont pay you shit for it because it's dead to them. Check your local DMV website Asmo, in Cali it requires very thorough inspection that you pay for then a standard emissions screening but I think salvage is alot worse in other states.

Thats the back up plan.
I'm holding you to that.
I've learned if its not branded "unrepairable" salvage in PA.
Its the standard deal.
Still a bunch of bullshit.
But if I get fucked, I'll just be working something out with one of you guys.

Well we bought my GT off Copart(pretty large auction) and all we had to do was have an inspector come out and tell us what we need to fix. Then after it's fixed we call them up and they look over the car and ask for receipts. Here in NC I believe that is only required if the car is less than 5 years old.
We've bought plenty of salvaged cars and never have had a problem getting them inspected and what not.
I did it on my talon I have now. I fixed it enough to get it driving at the place I bought it from, they took care of getting the rebuilt title for me. Im not sure what they had to do to get it but it wasn't any problem. What sucks is that they couldnt give me a temporary liscence plate for it so they said when I drove it back that I had to go straight to the BMV in OHIO to get one and If I got pulled over to show the police the title and tell them I just bought it. Well sure enough I get pulled over on the highway in kentucky everything was good though.
Just make sure its a really good deal though. I thought mine was but after all the stuff I had to buy to fix it plus your normal tune up and maintenance stuff you do when you buy a new car, all added up to be more than I anticipated. In the end it was not worth it like I thought it would be.
I've done it before, you have to get buy an inspection ticket and then make an appointment to have it inspected after you have it repaired. We have them inspected at the highway patrol, you have to bring all reciepts with the vin numbers from the cars you took the parts from (if they are used parts), at that point they will sign off on it and you will take it to the bmv and they will write you up a new salvage title or "R" title in your name and then you can plate it.

NC has a different title for aboandoned vehicles than for salvage titles. If it's abandoned, you simply have to go to the DMV with the paperwork from the sale/seller, and file "Lost title" paperwork. MOre hassle there than for the salvage title.
At anyrate, if you need an addy, I can hook you up. You'll just be running NC plates LOL
