How to check ECU on 1G FWD turbo auto....

Hey guys, Im trying to get my sisters 1G FWD Turbo Automatic to start. Ive tried replacing the coil and transistor, and still it wont get any spark. The last thing to check is the ECU, however I dont another ECU to throw in, so what im wondering is - is there any way to check the ECU?? Thanks

You can pull it out and check for cap leakage. If it looks like this or smells like nasty garbage/fish then its probably bad.

Kinda hard to check it other than visual tho.

Only way other than visually inspecting it, is to find another car to throw it into.

Although leaky transistors plague our ECU's so hopefully you'll be able to see it right off the bat.

Okay I pulled off the cover and everything looks OK. No bad smells or anything that looks like it was leaking. What else would cause the car not to get spark and fuel? Thanks

Re: How to check ECU on 1G FWD turbo auto....

When you turn the key to the ON position does the CEL stay active for five seconds before it clears away? No CEL means the ecu isn't turning on. If the ecu is fine like you said, check the MPI relay, that's what controls power to the ECU. I don't have any wiring diagrams with me, so I can't tell you the wiring diagram, but I do know the ecu wiring is in the Chilton's manual, which you should get if you don't have one already.

Okay does anyone know where that realy is at? I have heard that is the fuel pump relay is bad, then it wont get fuel or spark. Thanks

**UPDATE**

Okay I turn the key to ON and the CEL isnt on at all. So this means that the ECU isnt getting power?

Re: How to check ECU on 1G FWD turbo auto....

QuasiMondo. Thank you for the tip on the CEL light not coming on! I was having the same problem of parking the car then a couple months later, no spark. I was going to test everything else before the ECU. I checked the CEL and it did not come on. Pulled the ECU and had cap puke all over.

Thanks!
