VIN Numbers

I was just wondering if it is possible to get away with switching the VIN numbers of two vehicles. One is a car i wrecked and the other is a shell that i am going to get off of someone which has a salvage title and cannot be registered. The car i wrecked would be going to the junkyard after i swap everything out of it and into the shell. I guess what i am asking is, is it easy to switch the identity of 2 cars? Just want some input

Re: VIN Numbers

Don't get caught. If you've got a rivet gun it shouldn't be too hard to pull off the swap.

Re: VIN Numbers

I always toyed with this idea. However if the shit ever hits the fan your in deep trouble. However you probably would be anyway because to find this out it would have to be an accident, etc.
I always joked about buying 2 95 green awd's and having the same vin number on both so I'd only have to register/insure one. I am sure people have done this in the past.

Re: VIN Numbers

well the thing was, my current car was in an accident but not a total. I found a guy here that would sell me his shell which is a salvage title. If i swap everything over and send my current car to the junkyard with the vin number from the new car then it would be like i was sending the salvaged one to the junkyard? I do not know, i hardly drive the car anyways i just need something to work on

Re: VIN Numbers

I had a similar dilemma, I had a 96 gs clean title that I stripped, I have a 95 GSX that I used most of the stripped parts on (also with a clean title). I gave the gs shell away to a buddies shredder scrap metal yard for free.

I have since put the dash with the GS VIN in the GSX and I have bought temp tags and had it E-Checked as it was a GS. No one has said anything yet.

So I don't see why you couldn't get away with the salvaged shell taking the place of the wrecked one.

Re: VIN Numbers

VIN number???

VIN= "Vehicle Identification Number" <--- no need to put the word "number" after VIN.

Re: VIN Numbers

Well, is it even actually illegal? What makes a car, "that car"? Is it the dash? Or what?

Re: VIN Numbers

Hehe, well if you wanna get technical it isn't really a number, mine has letters as well!

Shouldn't it be VIS, Vehicle Identification String?

Re: VIN Numbers

Well on my TOTALLY stock TALON TSI, the VIN on the body, dash, transaxle and motor, all coorespond to each other. But, I guess in vehicles after a certain time period, the DMV just assumes you would eventually hafta swap parts in and out with new.

Somewhere I am sure there is a form for when you do this, legally ,that you are supposed to fill out and let the DMV know. I don't think that it is important to the DMV as it would be to insurance companies tho.

Re: VIN Numbers

anytime ive ever had a car looked at they looked at the title and saw the vin, and when i had to get a car inspected all they did was check the dash vin. when i got pulled over they only checked the dash vin (cincinnati cops are dicks!) fenders/doors/hoods/ etc etc can be replaced so the vins can be different. i dont see why they would be crawling up under the car to check a "hidden" vin tag.

Re: VIN Numbers

Do you guys have any sort of emissions in Fl? Cause i know in CT they actually scan and check the sticker on the frame on the inside of the driver door.
