What kind of damage can a bad lifter cause?

I have what I believe is just a bad lifter, its a fairly loud ticking, it doesn't go away when its warmed up and it gets louder through the rpms. Sounds like its deffinately coming from the head though. I don't think its loud enough to be a rod/bearing. It doesn't really make too much noise at idle though, thats whats weird. If in fact it is a bad lifter what kind of damage can it cause? What else could it be? Bent valve or something? I just recently changed the oil using 10w30 and used a little bit of Lucas and it hans't helped.

Lucas is horrible stuff for one thing.

A chattering lifter will not cause any damage, a stuck one will. I would pull them and clean them.

Google the 3rd party Lucas tests.

Re: What kind of damage can a bad lifter cause?

Yea, i've heard things about Lucas, both good and bad. It did a good job keeping the lifters quiet on my 2g so I figured i'd see if it helped. The thing that bothers me is when I bought the car 2 weeks ago supposedly it has SS valves, crower springs/retainers but I don't personally know who/where the head work was done. What kinda damage can a sticking lifter cause? How do I know if mine are just loud or sticking?

Re: What kind of damage can a bad lifter cause?

Call Chris or Erik at JNZ tuning and pick up a set of 3g lifters. I don't know how familiar you are with dsm's, so if you aren't really good with them i'd reccommend having them do the work for you as well. He'll give you a quote if you ask him. They do awesome work and their prices are very good. I've been there quite a few times to have work done and I can't say enough good things about them.

You are on tst now aren't you?

I'm quite familiar with DSM's just haven't done any motor work yet. This is my 2nd in 3 years, I used to have a green 2g GSX A/T we had to pull the trans out of 4 times in 2 months. I know how to work on a car just never dug into the motor. I saw on VFAQ you can just pop the rocker up with a pry bar or a flat head and get the lifters out that way by manually cranking the motor. I honestly just don't feel like doing the work, if I had a decent garage with lighting i'd do it but my garage isn't heated, the lights don't work and taken up by 2 Harley's.

Yea, i'm on TST, been there for a little while now i'd say 2 years or so.

Haha...I'm the same way when it comes to working on my car. I know how to do the work, but i just never feel like doing it. Thats the main reason why I started going to JNZ. I used to work on my car all the time when I lived with my parents and I had a nice 3 car garage to do it in, but now that i'm in an apt I have no desire to work on my car outside. For the price, I'd rather just give the car to JNZ and be done with it.

Re: What kind of damage can a bad lifter cause?

The 2'gs oil pressure is low at idle when warm. I been checking up on it because mine does too.. when warm. You can get another aftermarket oil pressure gauge and check it. But im sure that its normal. They said that oil pumps make some noise when going out also.

Sorry to bring up a old post...
