I have searched and all the threads I could find on this subject involve 1G's. My car had been down for several months and has had a whole lot of parts thrown at it and many hands in it, so its been tough to diagnose. Basically its how it sounds, fifth gear won't hold and pops out seemingly when its under a load. I have checked the cables and the bracket under the hood and there doesn't appear to be anything loose. TRE claims that there has to be something else wrong with the car other then the rebuilt trans I have bought from them.
Facts:
1. 2G
2. Newly rebuilt TRE FWD trans
3. B&M short shifter set at 50% reduction.
4. Lots of side to side play in shifter that may or may not have always been there. I just haven't driven this car in so long.
The shifter seems to not go into 5th as well as it should from time to time, but the other gears hold just fine.
Any ideas?

There should be a little square bushing that connects the vertical arm to the horizontal arm on the tranny. If its not there that is your side to side play. If it is there then put a few layers of electrical tape around it and that should solve that problem. Good luck on the rest buddy.
I had a similar situation. Mine popped out of 3rd and 5th under any load. It was bad syncros. Hope you got a warranty with that trans. Could be something else. Maybe someone else can clear this up for you.

Is the "big bolt" under the inspection cover the same one outlined in the link revmatch provided that is from a '93?
Point of clarification: I did this on my old '97, so it is not 1g-specific. To your question, I would say that it is the "big bolt" as a 36mm socket is needed to tighten the nut.

Had that happen in 4th. Turned out to be the shift fork for 3 and 4, it was cracked but still together, bushings were also loose at the cables where they mount to the trans.
