We are definately leaning against it now. Even with huge userbases there seems to typically be no substantive use. On my last trip to the camaroz28 chat room (and they have a user base that is MUCH bigger than ours) I found 2 guys typing burp and fart sounds. No one else was in there.
And when you do get a decent amount of people in there, conversations often degrade into name calling, harrassment, fights, whatever. There is enough of that on the internet already for sure, and irc for one has no shortage of that.
BTW, our next version of this bulletin board (HOPEFULLY it will be made available to us this month) has buddy lists and instant messaging built in. I have used the beta and it is slick. So that might satisfy some of your need for instantaneous conversation. Actually, the DSMtalk.com Forums have been so busy at certain periods, its practically chat already
