Help with custom Fab work

Here is the deale'o... This is not a NEEDED piece of equitment, but something I would LIKE to do. Purley cosmetic, engine clean up.

Simple: Want some help finding an adapter that can go from the backside of the 2G MAF style sensors to a 2.5 or even 3 inch round tube. As you can see in the first pic the air box is moved to where the battery used to be, see pic 2. I moved the battery to inside, and am trying to re-route my intake box and pipe. So without using 2 MAF's (one working forward, the other gutted and backword) to be able to use the MAF adapters sold everywhere, anyone know of anything else that can be used to go from the odd OVAL shape to the 3" round shape, to make plumbing easier on the hands, and the eyes.

Re: Help with custom Fab work

Ideas from plumbing materials, or some vent stuff, anything that may work. I just need some other ideas that may work. Ive looked at local hardware stores, and nothing has been close, that I have seen.

Or if someone has a busted 2G MAF they are about to throw, PM me.

Idea examples:

Re: Help with custom Fab work

Just use a 4.5" coupler or reducing adaptor.

Re: Help with custom Fab work

It can, depending on the quality of it. The super duty 20 times reinforced with kevlar (kidding) ones don't adapt so well, but a standard 4-ply one off Ebay works. Not 100% on the 4.5" - you might want to measure it.

Other alternative is just find a 2G rubber intake pipe and cut off the end of it. That's what I did on my car.

There are rubber plumbing pipe adaptors in Home Depot and the like as well that will work.

Re: Help with custom Fab work

Oh, and the flattened out worm clamp for the oval side is MD151059 - costs about $5 from the dealership, or $4 from JNZ.

Re: Help with custom Fab work

Thanks Curt, I was thinking of cutting my oem intake to use that round oval for my adapter seal, but I was looking for a metal adaper like your talking about from home depot. To go from the rubber oval to a usable 2.5" pipe. You use your to go to the turbo, correct?

Re: Help with custom Fab work

Correct. What turbo are you connecting to? It's actually a 2.25" on the 16G's out there. Both my Spyder and my Galant VR4 have the same setup. Shove a metal 2.25" 45 degree elbow pipe up the cut off 2G rubber intake pipe. Cut off as much of the acordian tube as you need to make the length correct. Then, a 2.25" coupler to the turbo on the other end of the 45 degree pipe.

Pretty sure I got the 45* pipe and coupler off ebay for really cheap last time around.

RRE used to sell this as a performance enhancement since you're running the air through the smooth pipe instead of the acordian rubber piece. Pretty sure the one on my Spyder is the original RRE piece. You can just do it so much cheaper now with typical parts.

EDIT: Just looked up on RRE's site, and it's still there for sale - "RRE 2G Larger Turbo Inlet Pipe $45". You can probably build your own for under $15 incl shipping of parts. There are a couple pictures up on their site for reference, though.

Re: Help with custom Fab work

Eh... Sorry. Looking at your pictures again, you're not in a standard FWD configuration. You're RWD. Either way, take a look at the pictures on the RRE site for that piece, and you'll see the pictures and how they just adapted to the pipe, and you should be able to come up with something.

You may need a 2G Turbo intake instead of that one you have to make it work right, however.

Re: Help with custom Fab work

See Im not running it to a turbo though, just to the TB. Just to clean up the accordian looking ugly OEM rubber pipe. And moving my air box to the battery spot, to clean up the LH side of my bay. Where some other stuff will be going.

Re: Help with custom Fab work

Found a rubber coupler at lowes. It said 4" to 3". Well the 4" is more like a 6, so Im taking it back and getting a 3" to 2", and see if I can shave the thick rubber down to a usable size. Post pics once its done. I dont see this helping anyone but 2G spyder owners, and any 2G style mitsubishi MAF cars. Or just to relocate the MAF to a more usable place, but I dout it. Either way, its a fun project.

Re: Help with custom Fab work

Update. Got the 3" to 2" coupler at lowes. Did some shaving, and made it fit. Looks decent, now for the pipe work. Here is the set up as current:
