Re: Who wants a dog box?

You would probably benefit from a PPG gearset to help deal with the shockload, or have your own made. With it being such a niche product I wouldn't expect to have enough sales to cover the required initial investment to come up with your own. Unfortunately you seem to be in the position of needing something that only a few people per year would have any use for.

Typically people that start threads asking, "If XXXXXX product was cheaper by XXXXXX dollars, how many people would want it?" are trying to gauge prospective buyers or 'testing the waters' as we call it around here. That sort of thing doesn't fly here or on Tuners, so pardon my mistake at misunderstanding your thread purpose.

It looks like you've got a lot of time invested in your DSM. Cool video, too. Hopefully you're able to find the solution you're looking for.

That unfortunately is what's going to drive the cost up on the dogbox. The DSM scene is dying, I think. And it's because most people are not willing to spend the money to make these cars do what they have the potential to do. If you're in the market for a dogbox, you can find them occasionally used and for a couple grand less than new.

Re: Who wants a dog box?

kronus, I disagree with DSM's dieing. I had a big post typed up, but theres so many reasons behind why I think it's not dieing. And it's all off topic really. So never mind.

Everyone gets the itch / money. Then realizes its not the same as a syncro trans and have to shift like a man.

If the OP is breaking gears / shredding teeth your pig needs to go on a diet or else it will just keep doing it.

I sold my shep dogbox because a second gear was $900 and went through 2 of them.

I now use a different style of dogbox that uses OEM gears that took 12k blasts on the first try out with it.

Random rant though.... I never understand why people with a "race car" keep them heavy. Take that shit down to class limit or something damn.

I think to brag about "street car" smoking a race car. Personally I daily drive mine and now that I am older, I like the feeling of a full interior. Before I had kids and grew up I always had gutted cars though.

Re: Who wants a dog box?

The A/T's have been a God send for a lot of guys lately. My car is a dogbox car. The 1st generation of John's dogbox. PPG no longer makes that gear set. So basically I break anything crucial and it's a $6000 paperweight. A lot of guys are going RWD. It's becoming increasingly more difficult to source certain parts and it's only going to get harder if some of these guys don't start producing this stuff on their own equipment.
Ripper XX is correct. The A/T is far more gentle on the drivetrain also. For instance the transfer case tail shafts. In a stick car with any decent power....might last a day or two of racing. Most likely not even an entire day. However in the auto the oe piece lasts much longer and the hold POWER! 1200whp on a fairly stock auto is becoming a more common occurrence. There aren't a ton of them but there are a few.

Re: Who wants a dog box?

It's ridiculous but in reality I have about $20,000 in my drivetrain!
-Dogbox
-NEW Tcase
-Everything DSS
-Tilton twin disc carbon/carbon
-Fabrication work

The A/T counterpart would have cost much less to run. Oh well.

That's not even that much anymore. My clutch goes for about that. Actually the dogbox use to be the single most expensive part on the car. All I can say is, it no longer is. Not by a longshot. I got my dogbox for $6,000. But IMO worth every penny. I'm just not an a/t guy. I might as well just hire someone to drive the car if that's the case. lol
