1g Head Swap Confusion....

1304 Views 3 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  DRW
hey guys im new to the board so Hello.

Well i have a 98 gst and im doing the 1g head swap on my dsm. I already bolted it up fp2 cams and a cometic hp head gasket and arp studs to 85lbs with the arp lube. got that out of way. I went to the junk yard to get the 3 bolt thermostat housing for 1g and water pipe. The pipe is where i ran into a problem. both came out of a 92 eclipse dohc.

Heres Problem: When i try and put water pipe on block.....

1. If i try and connect the water pipe to the water pump, the thinner pipe part that is supposed to go around block cant go around bc fatter pipe is to short once i connect it to pump. i can make it go around block but then its not all the way into the pump.

2. The pipe i got doesnt have a oil pump coolant nipple. do i need to plug it or rerout a hose there?

3. the mounting bracket on pipe doesnt match up to hole on block to hold it in place and doesnt seem ok to just leave it connected with hose and thats it.

Did i just get the totally wrong pipe and if so what year do i need it off of? does it have to be a turbocharged cars water pipe?

as for mods here they are.

Sounds to me like you got a NT coolant pipe. As for it not reaching, it likely just needs to be slightly bent a hair. Be absolutely sure that you use a new Oring for in the water pump, you'll hate yourself if you dont and you have a leak there over a 2 dollar o-ring, as that pipe is a PITA to remove, plus the lost coolant itself would be worth the 2 dollar savings youd have.

so do i need a 1g turbo water pipe? the not reaching part i think i could bend but the hole to bolt up pipe doesnt match up to block so there would be no support to hold it in place. as for o ring, it came with the new water pump i installed so im all good there. thanks for the heads up and yea it would be pretty stupid to not switch it out.
You should also avoid the water pipe off a '90 since it won't have the extra outlet for the oil cooler line.
