Had a old HKS bov in my 2nd Gen Tsi which would vent directly into the engine compartment, plugged off the dump tube after the maf sensor and had no problen. Then I changed it for a 1st gen bov and the car would barely idle, build no boost and barely drive. (Dump tube still plugged) then I reconnected the dump tube plumbing and everything was o.k. Is there any way I can run the 1st gen bov in a 2nd gen which dumps into the atmosphere and have no problems?

The 1G BOV actually leaks a bit at idle, causing the problems you described. You can "crush" the BOV to stop it from leaking (check out the DSM archives on how to do this). There really isn't any advantage venting your BOV other than the sound; it'll probably run slower since it runs rich between shifts.
