broken manifold bolt

991 Views 23 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  Chicago1
While taking off my exhaust manifold in the turbo swap I broke off two studs. One stud was in the engine where i have no reach to it; the other i can reach and probably use grips on it to take it out... I was wondering if anybody knows how i can possibly take out the one stuck IN the engine which i can get no grip on, thank you.

check the vfaq there is one how to remove broken studs
Thanks didnt know,
i cant find it *embarrassed*
That sure as hell looks like it works better than the vice grip method I used. I'm still missing a stud in there. We actually cut a slit in the end of the bolt and used a screwdriver with an extension and it still wouldn't come out! :O

I'll have to try this next time the manifold is off!
i never herad of those tools tho... i mean drill i kno but what is that other stuff? that.. thing... ya.. iunno i dun have that
I think what you are asking about is the bolt extractor. Go to your local hardware store and pick up a set of em, they dont cost more then 10$. First you drill a hole in the center of the broken stud, put one of the bolt extractors in it (which have reverse flukes, so they will grab the material in the stud) then just simply unscrew the stud. Works great. Here's a good tip I used: if the bolt extractor is having trouble biting in and getting some grip, use a hammer to tap it in a little bit.
What type of bit is good? I tried this once and the tip of the bit got rounded out and the other broke off
I think the bit I used to drill the stud was a cobalt bit. The bit chewed it up like it was butter, no joke. 2$ at the local hardware store here. I also tried some titanium bit and it sucked.
uh-oh i stripped all four turbo to manifold bolts and i need my turbo rethreaded i guess.. where can i get this stuff done at every time.. another problem with the car :'( one bolt broke.. one hole nothing will go in.. two bolts stuck in two holes (obviously arent coming out)

I would suggest the kit from Auto Zone, its $20 for 5 different sizes of drills and easy outs. Its more cost effective and will work on a wider range of bolts. I just removed 2 broken ones this weekend with the kit and it works great.

(for the guy with the broken stud)

I learned this through trial and error when removing my studs.

1: Drill out the center of the stud with a small bit and then move up to the next bigger one. make sure to drill into it quite a ways but not too far to the point that you drill through your head.

2: Put on the other funny looking bit, thats the extractor. Put your drill in reverse and slowly, oh so slow, drill the extractor into the hole you made until it bites. Continue to drill it out as slow as you can ( so you dont smoke up your drill like I did ) and give your drill rests if you have to. If you need to, you can use a small wrench to grab the end of the extractor to loosen the bolt ( like I had to do ).
so how about rethreading?
do u kno what the kit is called by any chance or area it is in?
plus what if it is broken and stripped, like in crooked?

For next time, PUT anti-sieze on all this stuff, especially manifold to turbo bolts. You may have to drill out the broken manifold to turbo bolts, thats a lot of fun cuzz those things are REALLY hard. :) to retap them simply get the right size tap kit. I forget what size it is.
oh, and when you remove anything exhaust related, it should be soaked in PB blaster or some type of penetrating oil. Multiple times 2-3 days (apply each day).

look up helicoil kits and then just go with all studs for the manifold that's what i'm going to do.
i JUST bought a whole bunch of new bolts.. and now im going to have to buy more, should i just go stud this time and not the bolts?
*i also broke them all already so i have to buy new bolts, or studs, that is why im asking*

just get all new studs and be done with it. alot of vendors sell studs I don't know what the difference is between the hardware store ones and the ones vendors sell. hopefully someone will chime in
