Car smoking turbo going out

774 Views 12 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  smitty1gbishi
I think my t28 is going out but i want to make sure that its not something else. I know that I have a leak from the oil return line. Could this be causing my car to smoke. The smoke is coming out the exhaust. Also how do you take apart the the t25 i cant get the center section out of the housing. I want to swap it into my t28 housing until i can get it rebuilt just to see how much differnce a ported housing makes on the t25. Thanks for any help.

The oil return will cause smoke, also there is great info on rebuilding turbo's on vfaq.com.

vfaq is only for 14b, 16g, etc. I've been trying to use that as a bases. I got a new gasket so im going to try to replace it and see if that helps. Thanks.
A leaking oil return would only smoke if the oil hit the downpipe. Other than that it is just going to make a mess under the car.

Check the turbo for shaft play? Signs of oil in the intake or exhaust?
Ok well today i got to taking out the turbo etc. It has some shaft play side to side but the lower pipe has no oil it. But will taking it out I started looking around and i think i found the problem. The middle manifold stud on the bottum had oil on it. So i just took the stud out and the treads are covered in oil. I've seen something about that on here searching. Any way of stopping this leak with out having to replace the head?
if your turbo is going out swap it for a 14b or s16g, thats what i would do, sence your car is a 2g you have the right manifold for it. Its worth it!
I might get a 14b for free from someone from work but its blown and he is still waiting for his 16g. I just want to get it to stop smoking for now until spring.
How many miles are on your car and/or turbo? If there are anything lower then 10k I'd start looking else where for your "smoking" problem. I'd check your compresion, then, if you have access, do a leak down test. If your compression is low in any cylinder use the oil up method of putting oil in the lower cylinder. If the compression raises up then your rings are bad. If your leak down results are shitty you most likely have leaky bad valve stem seals. Both fixes are time consuming and usually expensive so it's usually a good idea to live with the little bit of smoke.

Also, if all else fails run a can of sea foam through your motor by way of your bov feed line. I'd had a smoking problem on my 99gst and the sea foam almost curied it.
Well as of right now i dont think its smoking anymore. I put back on my t25(which as no shaft play at all after 60,000 miles put on it) and it doesnt smoke or smell like burning oil anymore and i also fixed the leaking manifold stud. Im planing of running some sea foam through it the next time i change oil. I took part the t28. When i took of half of the clam, the center section just fell out.

Hopefull this wasn't an Fp T28. How many miles? I guess I retract my last statement, turbo it was!!!!
from what i know it was a FP it wasnt brand new though it was used. I bought it off of here. I had it on for about a month until I started to see smoke.

Well that sucks, always a good idea to buy brand new. Also sounds like someone down the road in its life it wasn't treated that nice. FP does have an awesome deal going right now, 599 for the T28. I'm going the route. Were you satisfied with the performance of the turbo before it started to smoke? I've usually only gone the 16g,20g, larger turbo route.

Yeah i loved it. It still pulled strong after it started smoking but i turned the boost way down when it started. I was running around 16-20 psi and it pulled like a mofo.
