Car stalls after HKS cam install. HELP PLEASE!!

1670 Views 17 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  SVT Rob
I just installed my cams the other day (HKS 264/272) in my 99 GST. After I finished the car started up fine, I let it idle for a few minutes. I backed out of my driveway in neutral, still runs fine. As soon as I put it in gear and start to drive its ok, but when I stop and the RPM goes low (1K) it stalls if I dont keep on the gas. I tried to play with the AFC settings a little to richen and lean the low RPM low throttle settings.

Does this sound like a tunning problem??? I am still running an AFC, the car ran fine before the cams at all RPM levels, high and low throttle. Now the car doesnt like being at low RPM.

Does anyone have any suggestions???

Thanks everyone

this is not uncommon after a cam install it took a little while to reset my idle properly after i installed my 264/272 and my gm maf-t. double check base timing is correct. if it is then just mess around setting your base idle and possibly the low setting on the afc if it helps. this will just be trial and error.
I had to adjust my idle AND play with the timing. Currently, I'm sitting at 15 degrees base timing. Yea, everyone says that's way too much, but it doesn't run below 12. I have my idle set at 850rpm, below that, it starts to surge and stalls.

Not knowing much...Is that really safe though?
  rob your car's a freak.....5* is the factory spec. something funky must be going on there
did you use adjustable cam gears or just the stock. You really need a set of adjustables so that you can dial them in correctly. You would probably loose power if you didn't time it right. Your idle is going to suck a little with those larger cams.

No I havent upgraded the cam gears. I know a few guys with cams and stock gears and there cars run a little loby idle, but dont stall out. Im can deal with a slightly rough idle, but not with the stalling. Ive heard that you can play with the BISS screw a little to fine tune the idle. Has anyone heard this also??
I'm still using stock cam gears. And yea, my car IS a freak. I was running 5 degrees on it, until I put the new motor in. I checked all my marks, pulled the CAS, and made sure it wasn't 180 out, and it won't run below 12 degrees. It idles best around 15 degrees. I've got 9.0:1 compression, and run 93 octane all the time. I don't ever have any knock.

I've been driving it this way for a year now.

rob what is your peak timing by redline?
and about the cam gears they're un-needed my car idles perfect without them and the smae 264/272 combo spend time setting the base idle. this could be timing related double check that all your marks line up perfectly and check base timing. thats all that it can be....i doubt its timing.

I'm actually running the 272/272 combo. I think it idles fine :)

As for my peak timing, it looks like I'm at 20-25 degrees at 6000rpm, [email protected] I don't have any of my datalog runs to 8000rpm. I'll see if I can get one tomorrow.

I've got the 272/264 set up and I dont have any problems with it. Are you sure your not off a tooth when you did the t belt? just a suggestion.
dear god is that ever stupid amounts of timing......like said above your car is an abosolute freak. ah well whatever works i spose.

hahahaha ... that's awesome. Yea, I have to agree, my car is a freak. What's normal timing at peak RPM for you folks? I see close to 45 above 7000rpm, it never peaks past 45 though. With the stock motor, I wasn't seeing past 28-30 peak timing, with 5 degree base. I only started having problems when I put this engine together. I'm still using the same electronics as I was before, the only thing really changed is the shortblock, cams, and turbo. I'm half tempted to take it somewhere and let them tune it, see if they can improve on what I have done, or see if I did something stupid.

Sounds like its a vacume leak that you got away with on the stock cams and can't with the 264/272s

Either that or you're off a tooth. My 264/272's idle just fine at 800 or so.

BTW anything more than 19-20 degrees timing at WOT and somthing is fubar'd. You're probably seeing the 30 timing during your shifts when you let off the throttle.
20-22 is what i usually shoot for with pump gas and 20psi.

No, looking through the logs, I'm getting that before I shift. You can see where the airflow drops during shifting, and I do get a bit of a timing spike because of that. But I am seeing over 30 at WOT during acceleration.
What size injectors? They're not in your profile.

My current combo is listed here:

If you weren't talking about my combo, disregard this post.
