Tomorrow I am changing my oil and since I do NOT know what the previous owner put in the car, I am going to go with a non-synthetic oil. I have a 91 TSi AWD. Would it really effect anything if the previous owner put a synthetic oil and im changing to a non synthetic? Thanks

If the car has high mileage, then problems might surface if you change from Dino to Syn. oil. Changing from syn. to Dino won't really affect the car, except of course you won't get the benefits of synthetic oil anymore. :)
I like using synthetics in turbo cars, just to fight oil coking in the turbo. But if you are worried about causing the car to start smoking, it is probably safer to go with Dino.

I agree, plus a synthetic can handle hotter temperatures better. Most dino oil start breaking down around 200 degrees and pretty well wasted by 260, while synthetics are usually good into the 400-500 degree or more range.
