does anyone know how to check for codes on a 90 tsi? i know a way with an analog volt meter, but i don't have one!

The Pocketlogger is one of the easiest ways, of course you need one first.

There is a way to hook up a little speaker from Radio Shack and count the beeps to get the code. Of course I have a 2G and don't know how to do it. You could also take it to Auto Zone. They pull codes for free.
